′Man of Honor′ Similar to ′Baker King, Kim Tak Goo′?

KBS2’s Man of Honor aired its first episode on October 12, to the satisfaction of many who were looking forward to seeing the union between top stars Chun Jung Myung and Park Min Young.

But what struck viewers after the broadcast wasn′t the pretty people looking at each other with their pretty eyes, but the similiarities between Man of Honor and Baker King, Kim Tak Goo.

Baker King′s final episode earned a 50.8 percent viewership rating, making it a certifiable mega-hit. The drama followed the trials and tribulations of Kim Tak Gu, from childhood to adulthood, who eventually became...a baker king. Viewers have been noting that the meeting between the main characters, the gap between the rich and the poor and the success story of the main lead seem to be duplicated in Man of Honor...even though (besides the baking bit) those themes run in pretty much every Korean drama ever made.

Still, there is some legitimacy to the murmurs, seeing as writer Kang Eun Kyung and PD Lee Jung Sup pairing is the same team behind Baker King.

The way the drama depicted the three main characters as children and how their destinies changed because of their parents was similar, if not identical to the storyline for Baker King. In addition, other factors, including betrayal, conspiracy and revenge also appeared in both dramas.

But again, it′s only the first episode - there′s a ways to go, and plenty of time for Man of Honor to step out of its mold, and perhaps become as successful as its predecessor.

PD Lee Jung Sup said on the issue, “The drama is certainly different from Baker King, Kim Tak Goo,” but also added, “It does include a Baker King, Kim Tak Goo style storyline to allow all the viewers empathize [with the story].”

It’s difficult to get ratings higher than 20% by just targeting one certain group of viewers, and the producers for Man of Honor know it. The Baker King, Kim Tak Goo style story is a plot chosen by the producers after much consideration in order to touch the hearts of viewers in their teens to those in their 60s.

Because the two dramas have two distinct centric themes, baking and baseball, Man of Honor will naturally begin to diverge from Baker King. It′s too early to see whether the drama is a success or not, but most will agree that Man of Honor has laid the groundwork for a hit.
