‘Chilling Romance’ Likely to Break the Two Million Ticket Mark
The film Chilling Romance starring Son Ye Jin and Lee Min Ki is expected to become the first romantic comedy of this year to break the two million ticket mark.
According to the Korean Film Council’s Compiled Ticket Computer Network on December 18 (as of 11 am), Chilling Romance ranked second at the box office by drawing 126,971 moviegoers to theaters for a single day on December 17, bringing the total to more than 1.91 million.
It is certain that the movie will break the two million mark sometime soon because the 18th was Sunday and the movie has shown more than 38 percent in seating occupancy rates.
Even though Chilling Romance was outstripped by the American film Mission Impossible 4, which drew 420,000 moviegoers on December 17 (a total of 101), breaking the two million mark by the movie is meaningful because this year, melodrama and romantic comedy fell flat at the box office this year. In other words, Chilling Romance saved the face of Korean romantic comedy this year.
As major blockbusters including My Way and Perfect Game are set for release soon, the prospects for Chilling Romance aren′t too bright, even if it does reach the two million mark as expected.
However, experts forecast the popularity of the movie will not go bust right away because the movie was propped up by its convincing storyline, excellent performances by leading actors and a meticulous strategy for its release.
Chilling Romance covers a thrilling love story between psychic Yeo Ri (Son Ye Jin) who gains the ability to see ghosts after an unexpected incident and a horror magician Jo Gu (Lee Min Ki). It has been reviewed as a movie that broke down the usual course of romantic comedy and combined horror and romantic comedy into a unique genre of its own.
