As controversy continues to swell over Big Bang’s Seungri in light of his alleged sex scandal and pictures from a Japanese gossip magazine, the magazine itself has begun receiving attention and interest for the many individuals outside Japan who are unfamiliar with it.

We rounded up some of the facts we could find on the magazine.

Friday is a top-selling Japanese gossip magazine which is already in its 28th year of publication by the large-scale publishing group, Kodansha. It currently enjoys a high circulation of some 409,082 readers and is the third most circulated weekly magazine in Japan.

The photo magazine is infamous for its juicy reports on star love scandals, affairs, and exposure photos, often utilizing paparazzi for its photos.

Countless celebrities in Japan have frequently become the focus of the magazine’s stories and reports – Korean hallyu stars included among them.

Back in April of 2005, BoA became the center of a widespread love scandal when Friday reported it had spotted her intimately close with KAT-TUN member Akanishi Jin at a club.

The five-page story included photos and reported the two were seen hugging on several occasions and looking like a couple.

The story’s publication brought attention and backlash from both star’s fans against the other and even led to SM Entertainment issuing a clarification that the two were only friends and were just enjoying their time at the club.

Korean-Japanese MMF fighter, Choo Sung Hoon was also the center of a report by the same magazine in 2009 in which it reported he had been spotted on a date with Japanese fashion model Shiho Yano. The two eventually wed that same year.

Though not implicated in any particular scandal, the DBSK members have all been snapped by the paparazzi and featured in the tabloid magazine- often completely unaware they were even being photographed while dining, walking around outside and more.

Most recently the magazine broke the news of former Sugar member, Ayumi and Gackt dating, complete with paparazzi photos of the two enjoying an intimate time together in June.

Given Friday’s mixed reputation and history of making wrongful claims among its correct reports, many are still doubting the claims behind Seungri’s current scandal.

However, as time passes with YG Entertainment continuing to remain mum on the issue despite continuing to comment on the success of its other artists such as Psy, the mystery, and truth, behind the entire issue continues to deepen.
