Lee Soon Jae Wins Best Actor Award at Major Chinese Film Awards
Veteran actor Lee Soon Jae won the best actor award for his role in the film Late Blossom at the China Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Awards, one of the most prestigious movie awards in Chinese-speaking world.
The movie, Late Blossom, remained top 10 in box office results for nine consecutive weeks when it was released on February 17 in Korea.
Lee Soon Jae who has been showing his profound acting ability both on the big and small screen since his debut in 1956, won the award from foreign movie awards for the first time during his 55-year-long acting career.
The Golden Rooster and Hundred Flowers Awards is one of the three major film awards in the region along with the Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival and Awards, and the Hong Kong Film Awards. The mainland China′s film awards are notable as it combines both expertises and popularity, as the award recipients are selected by a panel of expert judges and the general public, who votes through a Chinese movie magazine.
Other Korean winners include Jo Seung Woo, who won the best actor award for his role in Marathon in 2006 and Kim Hye Ja, who won the best actress award for her role in Mother in 2009.
It is more meaningful that Lee Soo Jae took home the award with his role in a movie, which dealt with a rare subject material, elderly love, in a film industry that predominantly features films with young movie stars.
An official from the Chinese film festival stated, “Lee Soon Jae, who is well-known for his role as the father of Daebal (a role in a hit drama, What’s Love, met Chinese fans again as a hero of a wonderful movie. He struck all judges in the panel with admiration with his natural and artistic acting. We’re pleased because we unanimously chose him as the best actor award winner.”
Lee Soon Jae who was honored with the best actor award for the first time in 34 years since the Baeksang Awards in 1977, became the oldest winner of the Chinese movie awards.
The actor stated, “I never thought I’d win. What a surprise. I’d like to thank the judges and the audience for inviting the movie and giving it good reviews. I would be glad if this movie could be of a little help in introducing Korean movie to the world, including China.”
He continued, “I thought it would be hard for an actor from television dramas to be awarded a prize at film awards. I’m very pleased to win this unexpected important award at a foreign film awards. I have received the best entertainer award and achievement award before, but I’m happier and more thrilled to receive the best actor award for the role in a melodramatic movie.”
