[Poll] What is Your All-Time Favorite Teen K-Drama?
They say our teenage years are some of the most formative periods in our lives. Good thing we have teen K-dramas to warp our perceptions on love and life!
We’re kidding, sort of.
Still, no matter how old we get, teen dramas will always have a special place in our hearts because there’s something about them that is so ridiculously out of touch with reality, yet incredibly relatable that we can’t help but give in to the guilty pleasure.
With tvN’s Reply 1997 picking up steam and SBS’ To the Beautiful You set to hit the airwaves in the coming weeks, we thought it’d be fun to look back on a few of the hit teen dramas from years past and have our readers vote on their favorite for this week’s poll.
For those of us who grew up in the 90s, tvN’s Reply 1997 has brought back to life the fan girl lying dormant in all of us since H.O.T. broke up more than 10 years ago in 2001.
From the clever casting of former Sechs Kies leader Eun Ji Won in the drama centered on an H.O.T.-obsessed teenage fan girl to the unexpected twists in the story’s plot, the drama is putting a new spin on some old school material. And we’re loving every minute of it.
The original KBS Dream High not only monopolized on viewers’ weakness for teen dramas but for idol stars with an all-star cast that included 2PM’s Taecyeon and Wooyoung, miss A’s Suzy, T-ara’s Eun Jung as well as IU.
You can’t get more teenage-dramatic than a drama set at an arts high school full of students aspiring to be rich and famous.
The 2011 drama was so successful, it spawned a second season.
And as if being a teenager isn’t difficult enough, gender bending, love triangles and the rock ‘n′ roll lifestyle make life all the more complex for the individuals in this 2009 teen drama centered on a popular boy band.
From child star to teenage heartthrob and now hallyu star, Jang Keun Suk starred as the cold and standoffish leader of boy band A.N.Jell Hwang Tae Kyung.
Throw FT Island’s Lee Hong Gi and CN Blue’s Jung Yong Hwa into the mix and what isn’t there to love about this drama?
Boys Over Flowers
You’re Beautiful helped make 2009 a huge year for teen dramas, but the year belonged to megahit drama Boys Over Flowers.
Not only did the drama launch Lee Min Ho, Kim Hyun Joong, Kim Bum and Kim Joon into superstardom, cast under the spell of these flower boys, it suddenly became acceptable for men to sport perms and wear makeup. Although the men wearing makeup and curling their hair aspect of the flower boy phenomenon is quite regrettable, there’s no turning back now.
Riding off of the success of Boys Over Flowers, it seemed Kim Hyun Joong wasn’t quite ready to graduate from high school, starring in yet another teen drama Playful Kiss in 2010 as star high school student Baek Seung Jo.
Although the drama wasn’t a wild success in Korea like his previous piece, the drama was a hit among international fans and sold broadcasting rights to 12-plus countries.
Call it the Kim Hyun Joong factor?
Goong (Princess Hours)
The 2006 drama starring Yoon Eun Hye and Joo Ji Hoon is our oldest throwback teen drama on the list, but hearing Howl and J’s duet Perhaps Love from the drama’s OST is enough for the nostalgia to kick in.
Before The King 2Hearts and Rooftop Prince, we were bowing our heads to the royal subjects of Goong.
How could we forget the breakthrough drama that set off Yoon Eun Hye and Joo Ji Hoon’s acting careers—although we have to keep reminding ourselves that Song Ji Hyo stars in the drama as well. Weird.
But the spin-off Goong S, that, we’d definitely like to forget.
Now, before you run off to re-watch all of these dramas again, remember to vote in our poll.
