Weekly Roundup: Celebrity Rise and Fall
Rapper Tablo put on his brave face and made his comeback in two years, releasing his first solo single, while Kim Ki Bum, who also made a highly-anticipated comeback in a new drama, fought off plastic surgery rumors.
Here’s our list of the stars who rose to the top and the celebrities who fell hard this week.
Stars on the Rise
It appears Tablo can finally wipe the tears from his eyes since leaving the stage two years ago. The rapper, who is set to release his first solo album on November 1, reemerged on the music scene with solo single Airbag on October 14, stealing the number one spot on various online music charts. His fans and colleagues, from Naul to Simon D, joined in congratulating the rapper, who recently signed an exclusive contract with top talent agency YG Entertainment.
The singer enlisted in the army with a warm sendoff from fans. Rain entered the 306 Reserve Batallion in Uijeongbu on October 11, and he will serve for 22 months after the 5-week training period. Rain is quickly becoming a model active-duty solider among the numerous celebrities currently completing their mandatory military service. Since photos of the singers at training camp were released, fans have said he ‘stands head and shoulders above’ the other soldiers. We’re expect some major ‘Rain withdrawal.’
3. Lee Seung Gi
Lee Seung Gi has emerged as the greatest beneficiary of Kang Ho Dong’s retirement. He proved he could stand on his own as the lone MC of SBS’s Strong Heart and marked his territory on KBS2’s 1 Night, 2 Days. Lee also returned to the stage as a singer for the first time in two years with the song Dating Generation, sweeping various music charts.
4. Lee Min Ho
The actor’s growing popularity in Asia is undeniable. Chinese record label Huayi Brother’s Music announced it is planning an Asia tour project with Lee. A representative from the label said, “Lee Min Ho will become the greatest hallyu star in Greater China,” and a source close to the actor confirmed that Lee will focus on expanding his reach in Asia for the time being.
Duo BandToXic is set to make a splashy debut since winning KBS2’s Top Band as well as 100 million won in prize money. The band has been recognized for the members’ musical talent and star qualities, and the future seems bright for the rookie band. Many are curious to see how the duo will engage the mainstream music industry with its niche band music.
Stars Falling Flat
1. Kim Ki Bum
Kim Ki Bum, who made his return to the small screen in three years with SBS’s A Tree With Deep Roots, has become a target of plastic surgery rumors. The rumors began swirling when the actor was seen with puffy eyes, suggesting the actor recently went under the knife for double eyelid surgery. Kim took to his Twitter to address the rumors, tweeting, “It looks like that because I put on a lot of makeup to cover up a scar on my eye that resulted from atopy.” Still, it’s a shame that the plastic surgery rumors received more attention than his acting.
2. Im Jae Bum
The singer makes our list again for the second week in a row. We witnessed his rebirth on MBC’s I Am A Singer; however, the singer’s behavior on Gone with the Wind was nothing to be praised. In addition to disappearing from the set while filming in the U.S., the singer was swept up in a controversy when it was discovered that the musician in his street performance was actually vocalist Ben Kweller of band Radish. The controversy has not helped the show, which has been struggling to pass the single digit mark in viewer ratings.
2. Lee Jin Ju
While actress Oh In Hye’s revealing dress was a hit on the red carpet at this year’s Busan International Film Festival, rookie actress Lee Jin Ju’s cleavage-bearing frock on the red carpet at the festival’s closing ceremony was a major miss. Lee’s dress was a particularly jarring sight next to Oh’s elegant black gown.
4. Comedian K
Although comedian K’s name has not been revealed to the public, the identity of the disgraced, 41-year-old comedian has spread like wildfire in the entertainment industry. Although the woman, A, 26, retracted her claim that comedian K had assaulted her, there’s no denying the comedian received a heavy blow from the accusation. We expect we’ll be seeing less and less of the comedian since news spread that the comedian would be withdrawing from various TV programs.
5. Sung Si Kyung
Sung Si Kyung, who was criticized for taking 125 vacation days during his enlistment, is another second-timer on the list. The singer was well on his way to turning his image around from a ‘disagreeable’ celebrity to a likeable figure, but it’s back to square one for Sung it seems.
