The Board of Audit and Inspection of Korea released a report about the military situation on the day the news broke.

According to the the report, Kim Moo Yul was originally listed as a level two recruit, or an active duty soldier, according to his physical examination in March 2001.

From May 2007 to December 2009, the actor then continued to push back his enlistment date, claiming he would be taking the civil servant test or that that he had been admitted to a staff training facility.

During this time, Kim Moo Yul earned 53.96 million won in 2007, 121.4 million won in 2008 and 146.07 million won in 2009 through dramas and musicals for a total of approximately 300 million won.

In December 2009 he received a notice that he would have to enlist because he had used up his available days for postponement (730 days), and thus turned in a request for a change in military status on the grounds of illness in January 2010.

The request was turned down. In the end he requested an exemption from his duties saying that his family was unable to support itself, and was finally given a disqualified conscription status, in other words, a waiver for military duties.

A source close to Kim Moo Yul said, “When Kim Moo Yul was waived from service, his little brother, who was a college student at the time, received his draft notice also. Kim Moo Yul, however, was immediately waived.” Kim Moo Yul’s agency, Prain TPC, is currently not picking up any calls.

According to the report, Kim Moo Yul’s income was substantially higher than the standard for disqualified conscription due to poverty, but the officials at the Military Manpower Administration had neglected their duties and given him the disqualification.

Netizens have been in shock, saying, ‘He had such a hard-working image’ and ‘I didn’t know he didn’t have to serve.’

Kim Moo Yul was cast for the film AM 11:00, which is scheduled to start filming in autumn.
