Legendary Musician Shin Hae Chul Passes Away at the Age of 46

Nicknamed ‘Mawang’ or ‘The Devil’ by his fans, Shin Hae Chul always carried a strong aura around him that made the presence of this singer songwriter seen and felt wherever he went. So his sudden passing sends shockwaves, as the nation mourns the loss of one of its most profound musicians.

On October 27, Shin Hae Chul’s agency released an official statement, saying, “Shin Hae Chul went to heaven at October 27 at 8:19 PM (KST) with his family looking over him.” The cause was hypoxic-ischemic brain damage.

Shin Hae Chul received surgery for a bowel obstruction on October 17. Three days later on October 20, Shin Hae Chul was hospitalized for chest and abdominal pain and later discharged. However on October 22, he was taken back to the hospital, and his condition worsened due to heart issues that required CPR. He received surgery but was unable to wake up from coma, breathing his last on October 27.

Shin Hae Chul debuted in 1988 at a university song festival as a member of Unlimited Orbit (translated) and ended up taking the grand prize. In 1992, he went onto perform in the rock band N.EX.T. After N.EX.T disbanded in 1997 at its prime, Shin Hae Chul went abroad to study more about music and producing, experimenting with all kinds of music and bringing it back to Korea. He has released more than 30 albums since debut.

During his career, Shin Hae Chul fearlessly expressed his thoughts and criticized about social and political issues in public. He also touched and encouraged many with his gift of speech.

He leaves behind a wife and two children. For his family, he’s previously stated in a televised will, “Even in my next life, I want to be your husband, your son, mother, brother, dog, whatever it may be so that I can continue my relationship with you.”

Shin Hae Chul’s memorial altar is set up at the Seoul Asan Hospital Funeral Home and will be open starting October 28 10 AM KST.
