In celebration of Hangul Day, we′ve decided to roll out a special series introducing you to the Korean alphabet (consonants only)! We′ve selected a celebrity for each letter of the Korean alphabet as well as a correlating vocabulary word!

We′ll be teaching you how to say the Korean words properly as well as give you some sentences showing you how to use the words in daily conversation - so time to get studying, K-entertainment style!

[Hangul Day Special] ㄴ is for NARSHA

ㄴ (N)

나르샤 (Narsha):
1. singer (Brown Eyed Girls), actress
2. to fly up

1. experienced, seasoned
2. veteran, expert

Coming up second in the Korean consonant list, takes care of the ‘N’ sound. Depending on the word choices used, can get quite tricky to pronounce and many non-Korean speakers have difficulty sounding it out.

But hopefully, Narsha of Brown Eyed Girls isn’t too hard to say, as her name is split into the three syllables of na, reu, sha. Narsha means to fly in hangul, and perhaps that’s exactly what this Brown Eyed Girls member belatedly hoped to do when she came into the entertainment spotlight in 2006.

Having debuted at the age of 25, considered a bit late for an idol group singer, Narsha lived her life before becoming a singer. That’s why we’ve chosen the word, 노련하다 - or seasoned for Narsha, because she’s faced many experiences as a celebrity as well as a non-celebrity.

And you can tell that Narsha is very 노련하다 just by the way she presents herself on the stage and on talk shows.

1. “나르샤는 참 노련한 사람인거 같아.” - I think Narsha is a very experienced person.

2. “데뷔한지 8년된 나르샤는 이제 노련한 가수다.” - Now 8 years since her debut, Narsha is a seasoned artist.

3. “나르샤가 스캔들을 대처하는 방식이 정말 노련하다.” - The way Narsha handles scandals is very mature.
