[Exclusive Interview] Brown Eyed Girls’ Gain on Growing Up and Being Sexy
Gain’s Truth or Dare, which was released earlier this year and includes the racy Fxxk U, may be considered the Brown Eyed Girls member’s most bold record to date, and Mwave recently sat down with the singer to talk about her evolution as one of K-Pop’s sexiest solo stars.
If anyone knows how to be sexy in her own skin, it’s Gain, and for the singer, it’s all about playing up her strengths.
“There’s a limit to the kinds of concepts a female singer can do. And I can’t say cute concepts suit me because I’m 28 years old now,” said Gain.
It may be hard to believe the petite Brown Eyed Girls maknae, who made her debut with the girl group at a ripe 20 years old, is approaching 30. However, since Brown Eyed Girls’ 2009 smash hit Abracadabra elevated the girls to sexy girl group royalty, Gain has been holding down her sultry songstress title with numerous solo albums, including her latest mini album.
Although Gain is getting more and more daring (and her music videos more and more NSFW) with each release, the singer doesn’t think she has everyone convinced that she’s not the Brown Eyed Girls baby anymore.
“Of course, there are those who look upon me maturely, but I think there are a lot of people who still don’t,” said Gain. “So I want to try a really mature concept, but I don’t think it’s working out that well (laughs).”
Nonetheless, the title of ‘senior’ has crept up on Gain, and in a K-Pop world that is only getting younger, Gain is beginning to understand the sentiment of her seniors.
On what has changed most about the K-Pop scene, Gain said, “There are many more young friends now. Before, when I made my debut, people would be shocked when I said I was born in ’87, but now there are friends born in ’94, ’95. So now I’m shocked when I see them and think, ‘Ah, that’s how they must’ve seen me then.’”
Meanwhile, for those who will always remember Gain as Brown Eyed Girls’ baby, the singer said the members are currently in the studio working on new material with hopes to return to fans within the year.
