[Exclusive Interview] Orange Caramel Talks Making Sushi Sexy and Rolling With Negative Reactions
K-Pop fans can always count on Orange Caramel to mix up a monotonous music scene with something new and refreshing, and this time, the girls are really freshening up the stage – as sushi.
Orange Caramel has managed to turn the cuisine into a concept, not only crawling into life-size sushi-to-go boxes in the music video, but also taking the stage decked out from head to toe in assorted nigiri and maki for latest single Catallena.
Following their recent appearance on Mwave’s MEET&GREET, the girls sat down for an interview with enewsWorld, where they opened up about the unique concept and the public’s reaction.
While many girl groups can pull off sexy, Orange Caramel was the only girl group that came to mind when the music video director tossed around the idea of a sushi concept.
On how the concept came to fruition, Lizzy said, “While eating at a sushi restaurant, the music video director thought, ‘I wish Orange Caramel would do a sushi concept one day,’ and we just happened to be coming out with a new album, so we worked the concept into the music video.”
The unique concept also sat well with the members, as Nana shared, “We thought it’d be fun and refreshing and that the public would feel the same way we did.”
And in case you were wondering, Lizzy confirmed those are real, life-size Styrofoam sushi boxes the Orange Caramel members are seen laying in in the music video.
While the girls and the public responded positively to the concept, KBS deemed the music video unfit for broadcast, citing the scenes of the girls covered in plastic wrap as potentially disturbing for viewers, catching the girls off guard.
“We never imagined it would be prohibited,” said Nana. “It never crossed our minds that it’d be taken that way, but there’s nothing we can do. It’s unfortunate, and we’re sad.”
Despite the minor setback, Orange Caramel has forged on, even expanding on the sushi concept and performing in bibimbap and rice cake-inspired costumes. So, how does fashionista and new Style Log MC Nana feel about the kitschy dress?
Well, it’s definitely in - by Orange Caramel standards.
“It’s unique and it matches Orange Caramel’s style,” said Nana. “Also, it’s not just cute, but feminine and sexy. And we wear a lot of cute accessories too.”
But will Orange Caramel be taking the sushi concept to Japan or Asia and beyond anytime soon?
While the girls said they would like to find their footing in Korea first, Nana added, “Through the MEET&GREET, we felt how much interest foreign fans have in us and love us, so it was interesting and we’re really grateful. We’ll work harder to meet more of our foreign fans.”
