On September 27, MBC Life’s History Who will be airing a special on Choi Jin Sil for the 3rd anniversary of her death.

Choi Jin Sil became a beloved star in 1892 with the line, “How a boy acts depends on the woman,” in a commercial, and went on to become the nation’s actress with the dramas, Jealousy, Star in my Heart, the films Ghost Mama and The Letter. Her illustrious career lasted until her final role in the MBC drama, Last Scandal, after which, her sudden death, on October 2, 2008, shocked the world.

In an interview with the show’s producers, Choi Jin Sil’s mother Jung Ok Soon stated, “At one time, everywhere you went, you could hear people saying, ‘Choi Jin Sil, Choi Jin Sil,’ but now, I feel like my daughter is being forgotten, which leaves me heartbroken and sad. What can I do to make her be remembered for a long time…”

Jung Ok Soon also revealed many anecdotes about the actress, one of them telling of how she “cried for a week after [Choi] Jin Young was enlisted, but then thought up a way to meet Jin Young.” She also spoke about Choi Jin Sil as a child, and how she suffered from difficult times after her tumultuous, public divorce, as well as after reading malicious comments on the internet.

Though it’s been three years since her death, Choi Jin Sil’s suicide still stands out in nearly everyone’s memory as one of the saddest and most significant indicators that not only had Korea’s internet culture become too harsh, but that depression was also an illness that needed to be dealt with, and not just ignored.
