Referring to the film’s table tennis theme, Ha revealed, “I disliked table tennis to the extent of saying no to the production. It was a miracle that I was able to finish the filming.”

She added, “I didn’t even know how to hold a ping pong paddle at first. My swing was terrible and I had the most difficulty adjusting out of all the actors. I also suffered injuries to my knees and couldn’t sleep at night due to the severity of my muscle cramps. It was truly a production created by the fighting spirit of the cast members.”

“I have also learned that table tennis is quite difficult and realized what a fascinating sport it is. Although it was difficult at times, I was moved to tears when I saw the screenplay and I hope the movie’s sincerity can be passed on to the audience,” Ha said.

Ha will portray former table tennis player and current coach Hyun Jung Hwa in Korea. The film is based on a true story from the 1991 World Table Tennis Championship held in Chiba, Japan and features the unified North and South Korean table tennis team. Teaming up with North Korean Lee Bun Hui (Bae Doo Na), Hyun Jung Hwa (Ha) overcomes the formidable Chinese team and wins the gold medal, becoming Korea’s table tennis hero in the process.

Viewers will get to see the growing unity, teamwork and friendship of the North-South Korean table tennis team throughout the 46-day World Table Tennis Championship event.

The film will be released in theaters in May 3.
