′Architecture 101′ Set to Become Highest Grossing Romance Movie
Architecture 101 is well on its way to breaking the all-time box office record for romance movies. According to the April 16 data compiled by the Korean Film Council, Architecture 101 was viewed by 2,917,550 moviegoers since its release and is expected to surpass the 3 million mark. It is all the more impressive that the romance movie achieved its numbers during the March-April season, which is usually considered the box office’s slow season.
Up until now, Maundy Thursday was the romance movie with the highest ticket sales with over 3.13 million viewers to its credit. However, Architecture 101 is in a great position to surpass those numbers as it currently enjoys the third spot in the box office, even though the movie has been out in theaters for over a month. As a result, Architecture 101 is on track to break the record in less than a week and only needs 220,000 more moviegoers to claim the all-time record. Assuming the current trend continues, Architecture 101 should claim the all-time record sometime this weekend. In addition, the film is expected to easily overtake You’re My Sunshine, which is currently holding the no. 2 spot with over 3.05 million viewers to its credit.
An official from Architecture 101 said, “We are currently basking in the two Best New Actor nominations for Lee Je Hoon and Suzy for the Paeksang Arts Award, which will be held in April 26. We hope [they] will go on to win the awards.”
Meanwhile, Man Waiting for Adultery was released on April 11 and brought 396,694 moviegoers to theaters since its release, placing second in the box office. The box office crown went to the Hollywood blockbuster movie Battleship, which brought 1,195,707 viewers to theaters and easily claimed the top spot in the box office.
