[2013 MAMA] D-7: YG’s Solo Artists Maintain the Lead
While idol groups have been all the rage in recent years, K-Pop’s solo artists are proving their prowess in the polls for the 2013 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA).
According to the current rankings on the MAMA voting page as of November 15, Big Bang’s G-Dragon, who returned with his second solo album this year, continues to hold on to the top spots for Best Male Artist, Best Dance Performance – Male Solo and NISSAN JUKE Best Music Video.
CL of Big Bang’s sister group 2NE1, meanwhile, is ranked number one for Best Dance Performance – Female Solo with 37.6 percent of votes, above Lee Hyori, Sunmi, G.Na and Seo In Young.
G-Dragon and CL both hail from popular YG idol groups, but the leaders, in particular, shined this year with their solo releases.
Meanwhile, YG′s rookie artist Lee Hi is leading in the polls for Best New Female Artist with 42.4 percent of votes, racing ahead of Kim Ye Rim, girl groups Crayon Pop and Ladies Code, as well as Yoo Sung Eun.
Solo stars have taken the reins in other notable categories as well, as the Nation’s Little Sister, IU, maintains the lead for Best Vocal Performance with 35.5 percent of votes, while K.Will leads with 35.3 percent of votes for Best Vocal Performance – Male.
Voting for the 2013 MAMA will remain open until November 21, and the award ceremony is set to take place in Hong Kong on November 22.
