Architecture 101 is expected to shoot past the 1 million audience mark on March 29, just eight days since its premiere.

According to the Korean Film Council′s Compiled Ticket Computer Network, Architecture 101 brought in 962,767 moviegoers up to March 28. It needs just 40,000 to reach 1 million, but as it sells 80,000 tickets every weekday, it is almost confirmed that it will pass 1 million on March 29.

Architecture 101 is also gathering much praise for its quality, which means that it won’t be cooling down anytime soon.

Why is Architecture 101 so popular? The main reason is that although it is a love story, it manages to relate to its male audience.

The story isn’t simply told from the women’s point of view, and manages to cover the point of view of a man who has a crush, drawing out memories from the men’s early college years.

The film is especially proving to be popular among men who entered school in the 90s. Romantic films are usually supported by females, but the film managed to include stories that men would relate to, bringing out praise from both male and female audiences.

One man who entered college in the 90s said, “It was exactly what I went through. Its detail on how it was in the mid-90s is also brilliantly done.”

The film is also gathering interest in that it talks about first love through the theme of architecture. Many films in the past have put together stories about first love, but their stories were mostly led by the love relationship itself. Even when other themes were used to lead the story, many of them were stereotypical, like chronic diseases. Using the fairly masculine topic of architecture to talk about first love appealed to both genders and provided them with a new take on love.

Director Lee Yong Joo’s directing skills added to the strength of the film. Audiences and film professionals alike acknowledge that Lee Yong Joo is talented in directing. Director Byun Young Joo of the film Train, which premiered on March 8, also previously showed he was looking forward to Lee Yong Joo’s new piece.

As it’s looking toward 1 million moviegoers and it’s being praised for its quality, Architecture 101 seems to be set to lead the Korean Box Office for a while.
