Though member Shin Hye Sung has played the role of main vocal for Shinhwa for the past fourteen years, did you know Kim Dong Wan was the original lead vocal for the group?

On the March 28 episode of MBC’s Radio Star, Shinhwa was the featured guest on the show as they spent time reflecting on the group’s fourteen year journey.

At one point MC Kim Gura turned to Kim Dong Wan and said, “Since you sing well I think you would’ve had some greed for the lead vocal position.”

At this, Kim surprisingly revealed that he was originally the lead vocal for Shinhwa.

Kim shared that before Shinhwa debuted, “After Yoo Young Jin heard our voices he said [to me] ‘You do the lead vocals’ and that’s how we practiced. But I became nervous in the recording studio and wouldn’t be able to record and I’d get in trouble. The parts I couldn’t do Hye Sung was able to sing well and that’s how Hye Sung came to be [Shinhwa’s] lead vocalist.”
