It seems zombies are the new vampires, and now Korea is getting on board with its first zombie movie as well.

The upcoming Sci-Fi movie Doomsday Book is divided into three parts, including Ryu’s zombie portion, Brave New World, which will make Doomsday Book Korea’s first-ever zombie movie. Though the movie actually first went into production six years ago, due to budget issues, the movie′s filming was halted until recently.

Ryu’s Brave New World revolves around the start of a zombie apocalypse which originates from a virus that is born from food waste that has been improperly dumped. Ryu plays researcher Yoon Suk Woo, who becomes the first carrier of the zombie virus.

As Korea’s first zombie movie, Brave New World and its crew had its fair share of difficulties, as the different skin tones Asians have meant the make-up crew had to create the look of a ′Korean zombie′ from scratch. Ryu′s makeup took reportedly six hours to do everyday.

“To go into the full zombie makeup it took six hours. At first [the zombie makeup] was frightening but after thinking that this would be what I’d look like as a real zombie it was intriguing. The process of transforming from a mild-mannered researcher to a violent zombie was difficult but it was fun,” Ryu shared.

Director Lim Pil Sung of the movie had particular praise for Ryu and his portrayal saying, “Ryu is a natural creator. From the zombie’s walk to its breaking, Ryu offered many ideas. It would be difficult to find a Korean actor who does a better portrayal of a zombie than Ryu Seung Bum.”

Doomsday Book will premiere on April 11 and also stars Kim Kang Woo and Kim Gyuri.
