Lee Sun Gyun, lead actor of the box office topping film Helpless (Train), revealed that at first he didn’t really want to take up the role.

At the Helpless media day event held on March 12, Lee Sun Gyun said, “I thought the scenario was good, but I didn’t really think I wanted to be in it. After meeting with director Byun Young Joo, however, I realized that Moon Ho’s character could change. That’s how I decided to take up the role.”

To director Byun Young Joo’s question asking why he made the decision when the film wasn’t headed by a commercially successful director, he answered with a laugh, “It’s not the time for me to look for things like that. I thought it was a good piece.”

“I believe the film is gaining more love because not many were looking forward to the film,” Lee Sun Gyun said about the reason Helpless is causing an unexpected storm.

“He’s an actor that knows how to live up to the reality not contained in the scenario,” the director said about Lee Sun Gyun.

“These days we’re holding stage events, and Lee Sun Gyun is very popular, more popular than I expected.”

Lee Sun Gyun launched a counterattack at the statement, saying, “I didn’t know director Byun [Young Joo] would be such a great director,” to laughs from the audience.

Helpless has been staying at the top of the box office since its premiere. According to the Korean Film Council′s Compiled Ticket Computer Network, the film continued its success on March 12 with 77,243 moviegoers, meaning total ticket sales reached 763,168.

Helpless is a mystery film about a man and a detective who set off to look for the man′s missing fiance. It′s currently standing strong, thanks to the solid original story by the Japanese mystery novelist Miyuki Miyabe, the director’s skillful Korean reinterpretation and the actors’ skills.
