Channels Fight over Kim Soo Hyun
The three main channels are fighting to get something out of the Kim Soo Hyun syndrome. Kim Soo Hyun’s every move is making issues after he hit it big with the MBC drama The Sun and the Moon, and even his past videos and actions are being dragged into the spotlight.
At this, the three main channels are airing Kim Soo Hyun specials, trying to prove that they were the ones that saw his potential first.
In the beginning of 2011, Kim Soo Hyun scored big points with his character Sam Dong in KBS2’s Dream High.
On March 9, KBS boasted of the success by airing all 16 episodes of Dream High in a row on the KBS Drama channel.
An official from the channel said, “Recently we’re receiving many requests for reruns of Dream High. For those Dream High 2 viewers who didn’t get to see the first season and those who want to see Kim Soo Hyun act as Sam Dong again, we prepared a day in which they can get all of the episodes of the first Dream High in one day.”
Viewers got to see Kim Soo Hyun for an unprecedented 20 full hours while the entire drama aired.
SBS will also be coming out with videos from Kim Soo Hyun’s past. On March 17, SBS E!TV will be airing reruns all day of the drama Giant, in which Kim Soo Hyun appears as a child actor, and Will It Snow for Christmas?.
But to drive in the Kim Soo Hyun Syndrome even further, the channel won’t be airing the entire drama, but only the parts in which Kim Soo Hyun appear: episodes one to eight from Giant and the first two episodes of Will It Snow for Christmas? This shows that the special is exclusively for those fans that are waiting to see Kim Soo Hyun.
An official said, “These days, stories from producers who said they knew Kim Soo Hyun would become great ever since he was a rookie and managers who tried to sign him into their agency when he didn’t have one but failed are gathering attention. Even the industry is getting into the Hwon syndrome.”
MBC’s Section TV Entertainment is also airing Kim Soo Hyun specials every week. Many are looking forward to whether the Kim Soo Hyun syndrome will continue even after The Sun and the Moon comes to an end, and whether he’ll be able to conquer not only advertising, but also the box office.
An official from Kim Soo Hyun’s upcoming film The Professionals said, “In the beginning Kim Soo Hyun’s role wasn’t much bigger compared to Kim Yun Suk, Kim Hye Soo and Jun Ji Hyun, but after the Kim Soo Hyun boom came about, we’re shifting our marketing point to Kim Soo Hyun. We’re also expecting the film to become a big issue because he has a love line with Jun Ji Hyun.”
The Professionals will premiere in July.
