Girl group Kara has come under fire for comments its members made on a Japanese show about the dating culture in Korea, which some say cast Korean culture in a negative light.

A netizen recently posted screen captures on an online community message board of the Kara members’ past appearance on a Japanese program with the title “Kara’s Problematic Comment.”

Kara Members’ ‘Ladies First’ Comment About Dating in Korea Stirs Controversy

The girls appeared on the show, where they talked about Korea’s dating culture, and member Han Seung Yeon said, “The men usually pick up the whole tab on dates. Ladies first,” before Kang Ji Young added, “[They] pay for all of the food and even carry your bag for you.”

The male MC then expressed his surprise at the last comment, saying, “They even carry your bag?” to which the members answered, “Yes.”

When the MC said, “That’s a big deal,” the members said, “It’s a big deal if [the men] forget that. [If they forget that, then it’s] You! Bye bye,” suggesting that men who don’t pick up the tab on dates are kicked to the curb.

The girls’ comments did not seem to sit well with some netizens who said that the statements were “reckless” because they are members of a girl group leading the hallyu wave and expressed their concern that such comments can lead to misconceptions about the dating culture in Korea.

Is this another case of netizens making a big fuss or should the girls be more careful with their words?
