Lee Seung Gi Shows He′s Set to Become a Top Actor
′The nation′s little brother′ Lee Seung Gi already has nine years of acting experience under his belt. He first stepped into the acting scene in 2004 with the MBC sitcom Nonstop 5, and since marked successes with the KBS drama Famous Princesses, SBS′ Shining Inheritance, SBS′ My Girlfriend is a Gumiho and MBC′s The King 2Hearts.
Most of his roles, however, were stereotypical romcom roles, making it difficult for him to showcase his many different facets.
So this time, he′s back with a completely new type of role in MBC′s Gu Family Book. He appears in the drama as the half-man half-beast Choi Kang Chi, who never seems to hold back on anything. With the role, Lee Seung Gi has been showing off his humorous side, his romantic side, his angry side and many other emotions he′s been keeping up his sleeve.
At the press roundtable for the drama held on May 20, the singer-turned-actor said, "At first I was nervous and worried because [the drama] would be my first period piece and also because it centers around younger actors. Before, I could just do my best in my role and that would cause synergy with the other, more experienced actors, but this time, I found it was fun to put everything together as a senior and give opinions."
Choi Kang Chi may simply be described as a half-man half-beast, but he holds many more complicated emotions inside of him that need to be expressed.
"I′ve always loved to read comics, so I had a certain image in my head about how I should transform into a beast; still, I was worried whether the image would be received well by the viewers. Thankfully, they saw it as convincing," he said.
Most of Lee Seung Gi′s current experience as an actor came from the teachings of his seniors. In The King 2Hearts, Lee Seung Gi learned a lot from Lee Soon Jae and Lee Sung Min.
He also said he was learning in Gu Family Book from senior Yoo Dong Geun.
About the scene in which Choi Kang Chi breaks down before Lee Soon Shin (Yoo Dong Geun) and says he wants to be human, Lee Seung Gi said, "I prepared a tone fitting to Choi Kang Chi for the scene, but Yoo Dong Geun sunbaenim (senior) said that though the character is of course important, the scene contains an important message the writer intends for the world, so I should become more calm. I kept tearing up during the rehearsal. I couldn′t think of anything else; it felt like Choi Kang Chi and Lee Soon Shin were the only people there."
"I want to thank Yoo Dong Geun sunbaenim for drawing out the passion inside me, and for helping me find that emotion," he added. "I′m very lucky to be able to act with such seniors."
Gu Family Book will next continue to tell the story of Choi Kang Chi and Dam Yeo Wool (Suzy)′s romance.
Lee Seung Gi said, "I believe romance is the most difficult genre to act in. There′s no answer, so I′m always nervous. There′s no specific technique I can use, and you need to really get close to your partner."
He then added about Suzy, "Suzy can express so many different things with her eyes, so if I keep watching your eyes I feel I can pull out the emotions I need."
Viewers are now left to watch how Lee Seung Gi continues to grow as a true actor.
