Though he had entered the military after giving up his American citizenship, an act that was enough to earn him much praise, Yoo Gun chose to remain modest.

The actor got talking about his enlistment at the press conference for his comeback piece, the KBS1 drama Sweet Springs.

The press conference was held on April 25 with producer Kim Myung Wook and actors Park Se Young, Yoo Gun, Park Jae Jung, Shim Hye Jin and Hong Jin Hee.

He said about serving for the army, "It′s been four months since I was released. I feel a bit embarrassed that I′ve come to serve so late, and also comforted that I′ve been released. I′m happy that now I can act with a light heart."

His enlistment had made many issues at the time, as he had suddenly decided to enter the army in 2011 following a successful career with KBS2′s Hello, God and Prosecutor Princess as well as the films Mission Possible: kidnapping Granny K and My Mighty Princess. His enlistment especially came as a surprise as he was known to be an American citizen.

Yoo Gun explained at the press conference this day, "I actually didn′t give up my citizenship because of my military duties; I just missed the opportunity to go to America once I started staying in Korea. I was a student, and I was concerned over my tuition and airplane fares. That′s how I came to give my citizenship up."

"I feel burdensome whenever my actions are glorified," he said.

He, however, showed how he had been determined to do his best in the military, saying, "I wanted to do everything the ordinary soldiers do, but that wasn′t easy."

He enlisted as an ordinary soldier and was set up as an assistant, but in a year he was shifted to the PR unit due to his status as a popular celebrity.

"I′ve never regretted my giving up my citizenship," he said.
