[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

Some time has passed, and Dok Mi is actually going out to the publish company for work. She smiles to hear that Enrique’s book was the number one seller last year.

She leaves work to find Jin Rak waiting outside of the building. Jin Rak and Dok Mi are all smiley and adorable as Jin Rak asks what they should for the one-year anniversary. (WHAT???)

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

“It’s been one year…already.”

Rewind to a year ago, when Enrique said he’s going back to Spain (dun dun dun!)

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

“I’m going back to Spain.”

But the catch is, it’s not for animation, since he’s already been replaced.
Enrique starts talking about how he remembers interacting with all of his fans while he was in Spain and having a great time

“But my dream is not your dream.
I wish you would all dream your own dreams and step forward to achieve those dreams.”

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

Enrique adds that he knows what the most important thing in his life is, and he turns back to Dok Mi (Insert girly squeal here).

“The person in front of me – my love is important.”
I don’t want to lose her.

Then Enrique does what we wanted to do for a really long time – he scolds all the fanclub members for wasting their precious life away.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

”This one special person to me is being ridiculed because of false rumors.
Do you think I can leave?
If I leave and achieve my dreams, will those dreams shine?
So I can’t leave until you all stop.

Dok Mi’s all touched, and so are we. Where do we find our own Enrique?

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

As Enrique explains the reason why he brought her to an uncomfortable place, Dok Mi says she’s okay.

Don’t worry. That place was a place that put an end to this annoying past. I’m okay.”

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

Then Dok Mi suggests they run away and go on a trip – f’real this time.
Enrique’s a bit slow and doesn’t realize how hard it was for Dok Mi to bring that up and she has to spell it out for her. but he eventually gets it.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

”Where should we go?”

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

And then Dok Mi tugs on his arm sleeve and says she’s going to be the guide today and drags him along. Enrique obeys.

Jin Rak breaks the bad news that he’s planning on changing the Rapunzel story, but the editor is too busy silently flirting and making kissy faces with Dong Hoon.

Finally catching her attention, Jin Rak pitches a new idea – drawing out the different love stories that people have been sending in. The editor’s not happy at all and throws an angry fit.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

I didn’t know anything about love.
Love is something that people do, so you can get rejected and make mistakes, but I put love on a pedestal.
I want to make sure people don’t make regrets like me, to give people courage to confess, and to console people in pain because of love.”

The editor okays it, but wants to hear the first story.

Jin Rak starts to talk about a girl who only gets four hours of sleep and a boy who has to work part time at night. Hrmm, sounds familiar?

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

These two are people who are willing to sign loan guarantees for each other.
These two know that love isn’t something unrealistic like picking out a star from the sky.
This young couple’s love story is a real melodrama – a life melodrama.”

The editor and Dong Hoon exchange shy glances as they realize the story is about them.

“Should we love?”

Yes, love.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

Dok Mi and Enrique are at an old Buddhist temple, where Enrique sees a little wooden person holding up the roof of the building. Dok Mi explains the carpenter made it because his wife ran away while he was working, and the little man symbolizes his wife and his wish for her to carry a heavy burden for the rest of her life.

Enrique thinks it’s sad, but at the same time, he thinks it means something else.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

”Don’t you think the carpenter was only shaving off the hate he had for the person he loved?
He was making the sharp feelings in his heart round and smooth.

It seems like there is a huge difference between love and hate, but it could actually be really small.
If you just take a small step away from hate, it could turn into love. “

Dok Mi decides to believe Enrique’s version from now on.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

Playing a little game, Enrique asks Dok Mi to pick her favorite phrase from a list he gives, but Dok Mi chooses to say something that’s not on his list.

The sunset is beautiful.”
The waves are beautiful.”

Enrique tells her to play the properly, and asks her one more time.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

”I’m sorry, Thank you, I LOVE YOU – which one do you like best?”

Way to be subtle.

When Dok Mi tries to avoid it, Enrique tells her to make a sentence using the three phrases.

”For pushing you away until now, I’m sorry.
For coming a long way without getting lost to find me, thank you.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

Enrique starts wagging his tail for the last phrase.

Thanks to you…I’ve learned to love myself!
.

Disappointment.

Dok Mi laughs and says it’s Enrique’s turn now.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

”I’m sorry for not finding you more quickly.
Thank you for letting me love you.
Ajumma, I love you.”

Enrique kisses her on the forehead, and we all awwwwww.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

On their way home, Dong Hoon tells Jin Rak that Do Hui has been leaving a lot of comments on the rumors about Dok Mi. But Do Hui commented that the high school rumors are all false and asked everyone to stop spreading the false information. It was also Do Hui who gave a lot of good feedback for their webtoon.

Dong Hoon asks Jin Rak to see Do Hui in a good light.

Speak of the devil, the webtoonists run into Do Hui.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

Jin Rak tells Do Hui that the friends she works with seem like good people – always worrying about her, taking her sides, and liking her…

”Don’t lose friendship this time.”

With that, they walk in opposite directions.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

Around the campfire, Enrique serenades Dok Mi one of our favorite songs – Kim Dong Ryul’s Like a Child.

After I say I love you and you accept me,
I say with confidence that there is nothing else that I need.
I feel a bit embarrassed as my growing greed,
But then I get all fidgety, thinking about you all day.

Because I get jealous easily
Because I get scared easily
Because it’s unbelievable that you are smiling right next to me
Because I’m so happy
Because I’m so overwhelmed
Because I’m afraid that if I open my eyes, everything will disappear,
I can’t fall asleep.”

Enrique says it’s his heart, and Dok Mi smiles, saying she has something to show him. It’s a slideshow.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

You told me to take in the world.
That first world that I saw and wanted to take in is you.”

Dok Mi wants to do the phrase game again.

”I’m sorry for confessing to you now.
Thank you for being my world.
I love you.”

Enrique’s touched, but slightly annoyed because her confession is so much better than his. Dok Mi’s touched either way and she wants him to sing it for her.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

”Will you continue being my world?”

Enrique says he’ll be the most peaceful and bright world, but Dok Mi says there’s no such thing as a perfect world.

”Sometimes it’ll rain, sometimes we’ll fight, sometimes we’ll hurt.
But the world won’t disappear.
I’ll wait until you come back after achieving your dreams.
I’ll wait, thinking that you are always by my side.
Like how a sun rises and sets, I’ll wait for you without a change.”

Enrique likes the idea of only the two of them existing in this world.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

The lovey dovey couple returns home, where Dok Mi is testing Enrique on dictation, so he won’t forget his Korean when he handwrites letters to her from Spain.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

They meet eyes, but alas, no kiss. Just shy glances here and there. Enrique later watches her sleep.

She believed that love is giving away your half and filling it in with someone else’s half.
That girl believed that her half was dark and embarrassing that she pushed love away.

But that girl finally realized that love is about piecing together halves that are lacking to create a whole.”

Dok Mi wakes up and sees Enrique sleeping.

Love is like a windup clock.
When it’s a brand new one, it tells you the exact time.
As time goes by and you forget to wind it up, the clock breaks down and stops.
That man has begun winding it, so that the clock will not stop, even after a long time.”

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

One year passes by, and we return to the publishing company. Dok Mi and Jin Rak talk about how Jin Rak’s new webtoons are a huge hit. Then Jin Rak asks what they should do for the one-year anniversary….of Soon Chul and Jung Im.

Dok Mi asks if Jin Rak has gone inside the security office.

”The hat mark is gone. Instead of it, there’s a picture of them together.
As time passes, the picture’s mark will be left, right?
A mark of not one, but the two of them.”

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

To celebrate the one-year anniversary, the neighbors all gather at Ryo’s. Dong Hoon asks Soon Chul why he doesn’t take house deposits.

Soon Chul smiles and explains that someone had done that for him when he was young. Since they have youth, he doesn’t charge for deposits, but because they have youth, they can never be late on rent – meaning, they should always live diligently when opportunities are given to them.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

The editor arrives at the party. She’s also a new resident at the apartment complex, and she and Dong Hoon exchange happiness and love, which leaves everyone a bit startled.

Ryo announces that he’s ready to leave Korea for Africa and learn the dishes there. He leaves Dok Mi with a little owl, which he calls a fairy that will bring her luck. Dong Hoon celebrates the fact that he has 580 won in his bank account and he’s no longer in the red.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

Dok Mi returns home to find a letter from Enrique, which is all about the results of the Barcelona game. She smiles at the fact that he didn’t make any grammar errors in his letter this time, but she notices that he wrote, “See you in a little bit” and wonders if he’s sending her hints to come to Spain.

She takes the hint and calls work to use up her vacation days.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

Dok Mi gets up from her desk and looks out the window, and guess who she sees?

She freaks out, thinking she’s seeing things.
She turns back around. Enrique is no longer there.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

”I really need to go to Spain. Now I’m seeing things.”
.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

Dok Mi grabs her binoculars and stares out of the window again.
Enrique is standing there again, and he pulls a I-See-You move, just like before.

Dok Mi drops her binoculars, just as it finally sinks in that what she saw wasn’t fake.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

She runs out of the apartment, and Enrique stands in front of her and begins to read her mind as usual.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

”This isn’t a dream right?”
“This isn’t a dream. I just arrived here.”

“I missed you.”
“I missed you too, Ajumma.”

And then they….

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

And we sort of die in a corner.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

Meanwhile, Jin Rak interviews another apprentice, (a special cameo by Park Sae Young) who looks exactly like Dok Mi, dresses like Dok Mi, and is exactly like Dok Mi.

Eyebrow raise.
Jin Rak has met a new version of Dok Mi. New romance in the making.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

Dok MiDo Hui and friends are at her favorite lounge bar, when her friends tell her that their waiter (cameo by Kim San Ho) is actually a really rich son, who has left his family to pursue his dreams, and almost immediately, Do Hui is intrigued. Target #2 locked.

Soon Chul and Jung Im feed each other in the security guard’s office, as Ryo packs up his stuff and remembers all the good memories he’s had.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

The editor and Dong Hoon bicker over a video game, but melt into smiles at just one glance.

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

And finally, Dok Mi is at her desk, in front of her comptuer.

”Knock on a closed door, and embrace tired shoulders.
Wipe away tears and listen to the sounds of the heart.
Like that, love each other.”

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

”One person can’t change the entire world, but that one person can be another’s world.
A warm, bright, and peaceful world.
If everyone can be even just one person’s warm, bright, and peaceful world, then one person will become ten, and 100, and a good world will just get bigger.”

[Recap: Flower Boys Next Door] Episode 16- Love Thy Neighbors

”Quegeummie’s world is Go Dok Mi."
"Go Dok Mi’s world is Quegeummie.”
