The MBC labor union stated on January 27, “69.4 percent voted in favor of the strike, and it will begin at 6 a.m. on January 30.” It has been a year and eight months since the labor union previously went on strike in March 2010.

The union plans to hold the strike on the first floor lobby of the MBC building in Seoul.

However, the company has positioned itself to take strict action against such a strike. An MBC rep said, “Because the strike concerns personnel, we consider it to be an illegal, political strike” and “It is the company’s basic policy to deal with the matter impartially and to follow the company’s rules.

The MBC labor union held a vote on the strike from January 19 to 27 with a 83.4 percent voter turnout and 69.4 percent voting in favor of the strike. MBC’s journalists association and TV reporters association requested a shakeup in the station’s Reporting Department and a production strike ensued thereafter.
