Cha Seung Won and Lee Seung Gi just keep running into each other. It seems like they’re even exchanging roles, because Cha was cast in the piece that Lee turned down, while Lee was cast in the piece that Cha turned down. Their short but thoroughly weird history will even be continuing with appearances in the same commercial and the same variety show.

Cha Seung Won and Lee Seung Gi’s Weird Relationship

Everything started with MBC’s hit drama The Greatest Love. Lee Seung Gi was originally considered for the lead role, but he turned it down because of his schedule. Cha Seung Won took it up, and the drama was obviously a huge success. Lee ended up making an appearance in The Greatest Love as a cameo later on, and made his and Cha’s fans go wild with a comical rivalry.

A year later the exact opposite happened. Cha, who had become greatly popular with the success of The Greatest Love, was offered the lead role of MBC’s The King. Cha considered it for a while but let it go in the end, and the role went right to Lee, who chose to take it.

The King will start airing near the end of March, and tells of how a South Korean prince under an imaginary constitutional monarchy falls in love with a North Korean princess. The drama will be directed by producer Lee Je Gyu of Beethoven Virus and Damo.

Cha and Lee walked a parallel path for dramas, but for a recent commercial they came together as a team, reenacting the scene Lee cameoed in for The Greatest Love.

Variety show producers must have become thoroughly interested in the way the two kept crossing paths, because after watching the commercial, they started bombarding them with requests to appear on their shows, and SBS even asked the two to host its upcoming variety show The Table for 100. Although the two haven’t confirmed their appearances, many viewers are looking forward to seeing them build on the relationship they built through their drama coincidences.

An acquaintance of the two actors stated, “They’re both amused at how they don’t have any connections or anything in common, but keep getting involved with each other with casting offers. The casting relationship that started out of coincidence is actually leading somewhere in commercials and variety, so at this rate they may even become best friends.”
