[Recap: The Romantic & Idol Season 2] 3rd Date – When Sweet Kisses Turn Sour
With our hearts still heavy from how last week’s episode ended, we pick up where we last left off on the third date with the idol couples from the T-shirt shuffle.
In the car with Min Hyuk, G.Na says, “I think I’m really fortunate. I was in panic mode just now, but I’m really fortunate. Min Hyuk saved me.”
“I saw G.Na nuna’s face in the beginning,” says Min Hyuk. “You looked really contemplative, then it turned into ‘This is better.’”
G.Na says, “To be honest, what I’m most worried about is that Jong Hoon will feel sorry [for me]. I really hate feeling like that. That’s why Min Hyuk, I feel the most comfortable with you, and rather than see you as the opposite sex, I think I can view it [the date] as if we’re going to have fun. And that’s actually more comfortable [for me].”
Meanwhile, Jong Hoon and Ye Won have taken their date to a trick art museum, where they entertain themselves by taking photos with optical illusion artwork.
After the photo shoot at the museum, back in the car, Ye Won says she wants to hear Jong Hoon talk cutely.
Some girls are into that. We are not.
Acting cute isn’t Jong Hoon’s forte, however, so he asks Ye Won for a few pointers, while we squirm in our seats.
Min Hyuk and G.Na decide to ride go-karts, and Min Hyuk suggests they invite the N-Ji Won couple to join them on a double date. Hm, we wonder why.
Min Hyuk and G.Na arrive at the go-kart park, and N and Ji Won arrive moments later. N points out that the girls are the same age and the boys are the same age. If you didn’t know, older women-younger men couples are all the rage.
It’s windy, and N offers Ji Won his sweater. Upon seeing this, G.Na says half-jokingly, “He took it off for you? That’s what I wanted! He [Min Hyuk] just gave it to me senselessly.”
She then sends him off to get her water bottle from the car. This couple is on the fast track to the ‘older sister-younger brother’ zone.
“I don’t know if this was just my feeling, but he [Min Hyuk] looked a little glum,” says Ji Won, as a sad piano plays in the background. “Should I say, he looked sick? Was that just me that felt that way? He didn’t say much. He usually jokes around a lot, but he looked tired.”
Back at the park, however, Min Hyuk is diligently explaining how to drive the go-karts.
“I’ve never been on a date with Ji Won nuna, but there was a heavy air,” says Min Hyuk of the double date. “A slight awkwardness? But I didn’t dislike that. That feeling. There was some kind of pull.”
After letting loose on the race tracks, the two couples prepare to part ways. But not before Ji Won and Min Hyuk exchange an awkward high five.
“What worries me, although I wasn’t conscious of it, is that I noticed him [Min Hyuk] more,” says Ji Won of the double date. “I wasn’t consciously thinking about how my actions would be perceived, but Min Hyuk…”
Ye Won and Jong Hoon are sitting at a restaurant now, and Jong Hoon says nonchalantly, “Does Min Hyuk have feelings for you?”
“To be honest, I don’t know,” responds Ye Won. “I can’t tell with Min Hyuk.”
“Right?” says Jong Hoon. “Min Hyuk, I can’t tell if he’s acting or going with his feelings, I can’t tell. He’s a strange kid.”
“He’s cute,” says Ye Won. “He’s cute but also…there’s something about him. He’s the type that nunas like.”
Oh, really? We couldn’t tell.
Ye Won and Jong Hoon are back in the car to set off on the next part of their date, and Jong Hoon has unilaterally decided to take the long way there. We’re talking an hour-and-a-half drive.
While Jong Hoon doesn’t mind the trek, Ye Won seems hesitant to go that far.
“Let’s talk about this,” says Ye Won.
“Why? I said I wanted to go,” responds Jong Hoon, before saying that they’ll get there in no time.
“Sleep!” says Jong Hoon when Ye Won continues to put up a fight.
Ye Won’s face tells us she’s not a happy camper.
“I’m really going to sleep,” says Ye Won. And sleep, she does. The entire ride. As more sad music plays in the background.
Not quite the drive Jong Hoon was hoping for.
Ye Won and Jong Hoon finally reach their destination and take off for their forest date, where they are given their next mission.
A scene from Song Joong Ki’s Nice Guy plays. But it’s not just any scene. It’s the scene where Song Joong Ki gives Moon Chae Won a kiss on her forehead, which is cut by Ye Won’s high-pitched squeal.
The two then saunter off awkwardly, wondering how they’ll complete the mission.
Meanwhile, Eunyoung and Kevin are seting sail on a yacht date.
Eunyoung and Kevin are enjoying their date, doing what any couple would do on a yacht date — take a bunch of Polaroids, do the Titanic — before they’re rudely interrupted by notice of the forehead kiss mission.
Despite their initial hesitation, the next scene shows that Eunyoung and Kevin have jumped right into the mission.
Kevin and Eunyoung walk towards each other. Kevin even gets as far as putting his hands up to Eunyoung’s face, but then breaks into embarrassed laughter before he can do anything more. Fail.
But as is the case with this couple, who can never get it quite right the first time (if ever), Kevin plants a kiss on Eunyoung. And for a few solid seconds at that! Pass.
“What did you think of today?” asks Kevin later.
“You answer first,” says Eunyoung.
“I felt a new side to your charms,” says Kevin ever compliantly.
It’s time for N and Ji Won to tackle the mission.
“Will you follow me?” asks N, who has scoped out a spot to do the mission.
He then tells Ji Won to stand between two elephant statues and tells her to close her eyes.
Ji Won, with her eyes closed, tells N to say whatever he wants to say. N then sweeps the hair away from her face and leans in for the kiss. He makes contact and Ji Won covers her face in embarrassment. Then, after telling Ji Won that he’s thinking, he scurries away.
Min Hyuk and G.Na are busily taking selcas by the beach, when G.Na offers to take a few photos of Min Hyuk. She pretends to look for the perfect angle, telling him to “Stand still,” before walking up to him and planting a kiss on his forehead.
“Min Hyuk, you’ve gotten so big” says G.Na. And the couple has officially entered the older sister-younger brother zone.
“What was that?” says Min Hyuk as G.Na laughs in embarrassment. She explains that to him that that was the mission, and that it would’ve been funny if Min Hyuk had done it in this situation.
Over in the forest, Ye Won and Jong Hoon are also busy posing for photos, when Jong Hoon suggests they take a few selcas.
They take one shot, then Jong Hoon asks to take another, but this time, on the count of three, Jong Hoon, leans in and kisses her on the forehead. And gets it all on camera. Now, that’s what we call multitasking.
Ye Won scrunches her nose as her face breaks into a smile.
Despite Jong Hoon’s valiant effort, however, the producer tells the couple they have to do it again.
This time, the two plan out how they will do it together. Ye Won even dabs on some lip balm...why, we don′t know since it′s his lips meeting her forehead.
The plan? Jong Hoon wraps his sweater around a “cold” Ye Won, who is sitting across from him, then kisses her. This couple can’t seem to beat the first time jitters either as Ye Won jumps up from her seat in embarrassment before Jong Hoon can kiss her.
Take two produces better results and the couple completes the mission.
“A lot of people might think ‘He’s such a player,’ but I’m very different inside from the way I look on the outside,” says Jong Hoon. “I hope she saw another side to me.”
On the walk back, Ye Won asks Jong Hoon to show her some more aegyo.
“You know, the kind that melts hearts,” says Ye Won.
“Ye Won, I have something to tell you,” begins Jong Hoon. “Like this?” Jong Hoon adds with a laugh.
“Because I don’t know a lot about you. And I want to see if you’re good at things like that,” says Ye Won. When Jong Hoon says he’s not, Ye Won says, “Just do it. I’ll be the judge.”
Jong Hoon tries.
“Ye Won, I like you a lot and… I love you” says Jong Hoon with heart over head.
We’ll give him an A for effort.
“Why are you making me do this? You’re going to watch the show and be satisfied with yourself, huh?” says Jong Hoon as Ye Won laughs. “I’ve never even done this [heart pose] for the fans.”
“I don’t have any aegyo,” says Jong Hoon. “I don’t know how.”
(Did anyone catch those crows flying overhead?)
“Why?” asks Ye Won.
“It’s embarrassing,” says Jong Hoon.
Ye Won’s face falls as she says, “It’s embarrassing?”
And things get awkward again.
“They’re totally different,” says Ye Won during her interview. “Jong Hoon’s personality is so — he says he can’t do embarrassing things.”
She continues, “I’ve been on dates with both of them, but to be honest, I was more comfortable and had more fun with…Min Hyuk.”
Back in the forest, the crows are at it again, but this time the couple notices it too.
“Did you know that crows are bad luck?” says Ye Won. “Crows eat corpses.”
The car ride back doesn’t show any improvement from the car ride there as Jong Hoon catches Ye Won dozing off.
“I overheard Min Hyuk say that he was going to change his halftime selection decision. When I heard that, I thought, ‘Is he messing around with me?”
Jong Hoon, of course, perks up at hearing Ye Won talk about her not being happy with Min Hyuk right now.
“He said that when I went out to have my interview,” continues Ye Won. “Anyways, he said it while I was gone. It was whatever. When I heard that. If I had gone on a date with Min Hyuk today, I think it would’ve been really awkward.”
Jong Hoon laughs, but doesn’t he know that G.Na is in the same boat as Ye Won when it comes to feeling shafted?
The idols have regrouped back at the house from their respective dates, and among the chatty idols, an unusually sullen Ye Won sticks out like a sore thumb. Her awkward interaction with Min Hyuk doesn’t help either.
But we’re taken back to happier moments as scenes from the idols’ previous dates play back in time for the song shuffle.
The boys will each takes turns standing out on the lawn while the song they chose is being played. He will then be coupled with the girl who comes out for the song. If more than one girl comes out for the song, the ball is in the boys court to choose which girl he wants to take on the moonlight date.
Min Hyuk, who is just as nervous as the girls waiting in their rooms, steps out first to meet his fate.
Fin.K.L’s Forever Love begins playing.
We…were not expecting that. Neither was the rest of the world.
“He went all the way to Fin.K.L?” asks Jong Hoon.
The girls smile when they hear the song.
“I think Ji Won’s going to go out,” says G.Na.
But she, and the other girls, are more interested in singing along than going out.
Ye Won, on the other hand, however, considers going out, saying, “It’s so cute.”
As Min Hyuk slowly loses faith, the boys in waiting wonder if any girls will come out.
Min Hyuk’s number one fan, N, attempts to defend his BFF’s choice, saying “Someone might come out thinking it’s funny.”
Jong Hoon (who else) shoots N down, saying “They won’t. This is a serious situation.”
Eunyoung gets up. Then Ye Won gets up, albeit with a confused expression.
Back on the lawn, with seconds left in the song, a deflated Min Hyuk is barely hanging on, when he glances up to see that someone has come out.
Ye Won hops out of her room excitedly then freezes when she see that it’s Min Hyuk before covering her mouth.
Min Hyuk doesn’t know what to do either.
Ye Won finally makes her way out and all she can say is “Aigoo.” And that’s all she needs to say.
“Thank you for saving me,” says Min Hyuk. “I thought I was going to die from embarrassment.”
Min Hyuk slips his arm into Ye Won’s and clings onto Ye Won.
“The lyrics were so cute, and it made me want to play. That’s why I came out, but what is this,” says Ye Won.
Min Hyuk, who is still just overjoyed by the fact that someone came out, says “Let’s just go” as they head off on their moonlight date.
Next up is Jong Hoon, and his song begins to play. G.Na frowns because she can’t figure out why the song sounds so familiar. When she learns that it’s Jung Yeop’s I Want to Kiss You, she says, “This was my background music.”
No. Don’t do it, G.Na.
G.Na gets up and dances to the music with a huge smile on her face but hesitates at the door, wondering if she should go out.
Meanwhile, we learn why Jong Hoon picked this song. It’s the song he played in the car during his date with Ye Won.
We almost wish Ye Won had slept the whole car ride to avoid this moment, but it appears destiny is back to playing its twisted tricks again.
G.Na is still behind the door.
“I love the lyrics,” says G.Na. “What do I do?” She then turns to the writer and says, “Unnie, it’s probably better that I don’t go out, huh?”
Yes. Follow your gut, G.Na. Don’t go!!!!
When the writer says she doesn’t know anything.
“If I open the door, it’s the end, right?” asks G.Na.
It’s the apocalypse, G.Na. Don’t do it.
The music stops. She did it.
G.Na puts one foot out the door and seeing that it’s Jong Hoon standing outside, freezes. She comes out, closes the door behind her and lets out a deep breath.
“Even before I put my shoes on, I collapsed. I don’t like this,” says G.Na of her feelings then.
“I think I’m going to throw up,” says G.Na as she steps out on the lawn.
These The Romantic & Idol idols have the ‘idol’ part down, but they really need to work on the ‘romantic’ part.
Jong Hoon grabs G.Na’s arms quietly and they walk off.
Ye Won and Min Hyuk spot the couple and dash off.
When G.Na, Jong Hoon, Ye Won and Min Hyuk see each other, “Daebak” is all they can say over and over again. They then take off together, as G.Na falls behind.
Back at the house, Nelly and Kelly’s Dilemma begins playing, and everyone knows it’s Kevin. Which makes it worse that none of the girls went out.
Eunyoung and Ji Won are told that they have to go out for the last song.
N’s choice, Eric Benet’s Here In My Arms begins playing.
Ji Won says with a laugh, “This isn’t it.” We agree.
Alas, she and Eunyoung must go out, and Eunyoung makes the first move. She thinks the other girls have already gone out, but Ji Won peeks her head out at the last minute, setting Eunyoung off into panic mode.
Ji Won, on the other hand, doesn’t seem all that excited to see N standing outside.
It’s N’s turn to make the next move, as he must choose which girl he wants to take on the moonlight date,
N, who said during his interview, that he wants either Eunyoung or Ji Won to come out, has hit the jackpot.
He says he will make his decision at the count of three.
“Let’s talk a little more,” says N…to Ji Won, as Eunyoung collapses next to him.
“This is too much!” says Eunyoung half-jokingly as tears well up in her eyes. “You’re dead!”
Scenes from Eunyoung and N’s first date and the halftime selection then roll across the scene.
We then hear Kevin, the other odd man out, call out for Eunyoung.
“Do you know what Chapaguri is?” asks Eunyoung. “I’ll make it for you.”
Oh, that thing you were going to make N? Yeah, you show him Eunyoung!
The mood back on the Ye Won-Min Hyuk and Jong Hoon-G.Na couples’ date isn’t that much brighter as an uncomfortable G.Na watches Jong Hoon, who is watching Ye Won wrap her jacket around Min Hyuk.
Someone please end the misery.
We end another episode on an unpleasant note once again.
With the idols inching closer to the end, but seeing no signs of this tangled web loosening up, we’re beginning to wonder if any of the idols will leave the island as a couple.
Jong Hoon and Ye Won’s date was far from the picture-perfect date Jong Hoon hoped for, while the kiss mission resulted in more awkward moments than sparks between the couples.
And rather than enjoy each other’s company on their dates, the idols seem to be more concerned about what the other person is thinking, or worse, wishing they were with someone else.
We hope destiny is more forgiving in the next episode.
