[Recap: The Romantic & Idol Season 2] 2nd Date – When It Rains, It Pours
It’s the first night on Jeju Island, and what better way to begin the episode than with some fresh-faced idol stars. Oh, and Min Hyuk’s chest and arms.
The idol stars are washing up, and Min Hyuk, whose sleepwear of choice is a black wife beater and pajama bottoms, asks Ye Won if he can borrow her moisturizer. It’s not easy being a pretty boy.
Ye Won comes out of the restroom and hides her bare face in embarrassment.
When Min Hyuk worries that his no-makeup face is “too much,” Ye Won says, “Your no-makeup face is nothing.”
“That’s true, compared to you…” teases Min Hyuk.
Idol star problems.
It appears the other idols have called it a day, but Min Hyuk and Ye Won continue to chat it up in the common area well into the night.
Morning finally comes and G.Na and Ji Won are anxiously awaiting the day’s couple shuffle in their room. The necklace shuffle is the next order of business, and like the first season, the girls will choose a necklace that the boys personally picked out and be paired accordingly.
The girls are shown their options, and one necklace sticks out like a sore thumb. Among the dainty charms, there’s a cork hanging from a cord, and the girls crack up at the sight.
Before we find out which necklaces the girls chose, the boys talk a little bit about the necklaces they picked.
Min Hyuk holds his necklace up and says, “The necklace is a wing shape. Do you call it a team emblem? [BTOB’s team emblem] has wings. It has a little meaning. I hope she likes it.”
Next we’re shown the cork necklace, and a voice says, “I made it myself.”
We find out it belongs to none other than Jong Hoon, who says, “I don’t know if it’ll look really sad, but I think it’s a necklace that has a little meaning.”
“Do you think the girls will like it?” asks a staff member.
“That’s the thing. I don’t think they’ll like it, but if, later, we become a couple, I’ll just buy her one,” answers Jong Hoon.
N has picked a star necklace and says, “I think [mine] will be the prettiest. It’s pretty, right?”
“To be honest, I considered getting a star or a cross, but I thought maybe it’d be too plain and picked this,” says Kevin as he holds up a necklace with a cat charm.
Hm…so far, the necklaces haven’t impressed us, but let’s see what the girls choose.
The boys are lined up on the lawn, and they’re clearly anxious as well, unable to stay still as they wait for the girls to come out one by one.
Ji Won is the first one up, and on her way out of the girls’ room, she says to the others, “What do I do! This is so embarrassing” before letting out a final scream.
“I want to hang these wings on the person who’s lost her wings,” says Min Hyuk.
We want him to not repeat this cheesy line to the girl. Or ever.
Min Hyuk then reveals that the girl he is referring to is Ji Won (aka not Ye Won).
Gasp! Where did that come from? We knew Ji Won was interested in Min Hyuk but wasn’t Ye Won the one who was by his side for most of the trip so far?
Kevin voices that he thinks his necklace will look good on Ji Won as well.
Ji Won walks out, and she shares an awkward laugh with the boys.
“Did you pick after seeing all of the necklaces? All together?” asks Min Hyuk.
“We picked after seeing them all and did rock, paper, scissors,” says Ji Won. She then adds, “There was one really interesting necklace.”
Jong Hoon plays the fool, saying to the other boys, “There is. That’s right,” before Ji Won jumps in and says, “I could tell whose it was right away” with a smile.
We’re reminded of Ji Won’s text message pick from last week’s episode, where she expressed interest in Min Hyuk over her first date partner Kevin.
Back on the lawn, Ji Won opens the case to show the boys, and Jong Hoon steps out then back.
Someone had to do the fake out, and now that we have that out of the way, it’s time to find out whose necklace Ji Won chose.
We see that she picked the star, as N walks towards her, and the two share sheepish laughs.
“This is awkward,” says Min Hyuk to which N responds with a smile, “No, it’s not.”
“What do I do? I feel weird watching,” says Min Hyuk before he and the others watch N put the necklace on Ji Won.
Back in the girls’ room, the remaining girls are dying of curiosity and try to coax the staff member to tell them what’s going on outside.
Ye Won is next up, and she saunters out awkwardly, unable to look at the boys.
“You look really cute,” says Jong Hoon upon seeing the pig-tailed idol star.
Cut back to Jong Hoon’s interview, where he says, “To be honest, I had a few drinks yesterday, and Ye Won said, ‘Jong Hoon, you must enjoy drinking and drink really well.’ When she said that, I thought, ‘If she sees this [necklace] and can pick up right away [that] this is from a wine bottle, I think she might pick me.”
We think the chances of Ye Won making this connection are slim, but we’re about to find out.
“Did you sleep well?” asks Min Hyuk.
“My face is swollen, huh?” says Ye Won.
“You look the same as yesterday,” says Jong Hoon.
Okay, let’s cut the small talk and see what she picked!
“Which one did I pick?” sings Ye Won teasingly.
When Jong Hoon mentions they heard the girls did rock, paper, scissors, Ye Won says, “We did rock, paper, scissors, and I didn’t get to pick the one I wanted, but I did go back and forth between this one and that one.”
Way to let whoever you wind up with that his necklace wasn’t your first choice Ye Won!
Ye Won finally opens up her case and tries to gauge the boys’ reactions.
Jong Hoon is smiling, but we pan back to the necklace, and it’s the pair of wings.
Conclusion: To quote LeeSsang, Jong Hoon smiling is not Jong Hoon smiling.
Min Hyuk then steps towards her and lets out a huge laugh in embarrassment.
“It’s you?!” exclaims Ye Won as everyone breaks into laughter.
“This is no joke,” says Min Hyuk.
“Really?! It’s you?!” asks Ye Won again.
“No, I was kidding,” says Min Hyuk as he pretends to go back to the boys and Ye Won looks lost.
Ah, these boys and their pranks.
Min Hyuk takes the necklace out of the case to put on Ye Won and says, “So this wasn’t the necklace you wanted?”
“I did go back and forth between the two, this one and that one,” explains Ye Won. “Because this chain is thin, I picked the other one, but I lost rock, paper, scissors and picked this one.”
Min Hyuk puts the necklace on her in front of Jong Hoon, who says half-jokingly, “Hurry up and go.”
Min Hyuk and Ye Won walk off hand-in-hand, and as soon as they’re out of sight, Jong Hoon turns to the wall and yells, “I was too obvious!”
The remaining ladies, G.Na and Eunyoung, walk out together as the rain begins to fall harder.
G.Na and Eunyoung open up their cases, and Jong Hoon nods with a knowing smile, saying “My hunch was right.”
Jong Hoon walks up to G.Na, who is holding the case with the cork necklace, and says, “You knew,” before putting the necklace on her.
Meanwhile, G.Na turns to the staff in shock, saying “Really? Daebak! I really…” And before the chatty G.Na can get another word out, Jong Hoon grabs her hand and they walk off.
This also means Eunyoung and Kevin are a couple, and the quiet pair saunter off after Jong Hoon and G.Na.
“Is this really right?” asks G.Na again.
“You didn’t know? Just look at it, and you know it’s me!” says Jong Hoon.
G.Na then explains that she chose the necklace because of the length of the cord, while Jong Hoon can’t hide the disappointment on his face.
Probably because Ye Won and Min Hyuk are having a ball together on their second date.
“We’ve somehow become a couple again,” says Min Hyuk.
Ye Won and Min Hyuk are waiting in the backseat of the car now, where Min Hyuk ever-so-naturally reaches over to move a stray hair from Ye Won’s face.
The couple is on its way to their date location, and Min Hyuk is capturing every moment on camera. He then turns to Ye Won and asks her to fix his hair. And Ye Won returns the favor. I mean, it’s the polite thing to do.
Ye Won then notices that her necklace is flipped, and when she points this out to Min Hyuk, he leans in to check then laughs.
“Come here, come here,” he says to Ye Won.
But it’s Min Hyuk who scooches in closer to Ye Won to fix it.
And of course he has to wrap his arms around her to reach the clasp.
The necklace has been safely removed, and as Min Hyuk tries to figure out how to put it on correctly, he says, “[I would know what to do] if I had done this before,” hinting that Ye Won is the first girl he’s ever necklaced(?).
Sure, Min Hyuk.
And soon, Min Hyuk’s arms are wrapped around Ye Won’s neck again. We hope he got it right this time.
They finally arrive at the café, where they’re welcomed by an adorable puppy.
The dog has stolen Min Hyuk’s attention (and ours), and when Ye Won asks who’s cuter, the dog or her, Min Hyuk pretends not to hear.
The couple then decides to see who the dog likes more, and the dog chooses Min Hyuk.
“You ARE a girl!” jokes Min Hyuk.
Even dogs can’t resist Min Hyuk.
G.Na and Jong Hoon are eating lunch, and despite not being with the girl he wants, Jong Hoon plays the good boyfriend part well…picking the bones out of the fish for G.Na. How sweet.
The two then stroll around the artsy Lee Jung Seob Street, and when G.Na, amazed by everything she sees, wanders off on her own, Jong Hoon says, “Follow me, please.”
After walking around the island some more, G.Na and Jong Hoon wind up at a café, where a clueless G.Na says, “For some reason, Min Hyuk and Ye Won look really good together,” as Jong Hoon’s face stiffens.
Speak of the happy couple. We pan over to Ye Won and Min Hyuk, and even the strong winds can’t keep the couple from taking selcas.
In the middle of their self –photo shoot, the idols are sent their next mission, courtesy of a scene from drama I’m Sorry, I Love You: the back hug. The catch is that the couple has to film it this time.
Ye Won runs away in embarrassment, and G.Na and Jong Hoon can’t hold back their smiles upon seeing the clip as well.
G.Na and Jong Hoon begin planning how they’ll film the scene and wander around in search of the perfect location. They find a picturesque path, set the camera up, and ACTION. The couple walks toward the camera, hand in hand, before pausing and cue the back hug. The back hug is just short of piggyback status as Jong Hoon hangs on, but mission accomplished nonetheless.
“In the beginning, he seemed like a baby trying to act like an adult, but now it’s okay,” says G.Na of their date. “I think it’s getting better.” She adds with a shy laugh, “Because it’s the first time…”
“I think we got to know each other better through this date,” says Jong Hoon. “I feel good, but I wanted to talk with the others as well, so I’m a little sad too.”
By “others” he means Ye Won.
“You said you wanted to go on a date with Ye Won, right?” asks a staff member.
“Yeah, I’m really sad,” admits Jong Hoon.
Meanwhile, Ji Won and N are at another café, and the two take sips from each other’s drinks.
No cootie complaints here.
The two then sign autographs for the café owners, and N says he recognizes Ji Won’s autograph from a call taxi.
“Daebak! You rode that call taxi too?! Daebak! Daebak! Daebak!” exclaims Ji Won in shock before asking where he lives. The two realize they’re neighbors. Small…world…?
Having broken the ice somewhat, Ji Won and N decide to film their back hug mission on a gazebo. N walks up behind Ji Won and fails due to embarrassment.
N gets it on Take Two, but we can feel the awkwardness through the screen. Nevertheless, they pass the mission.
It’s Eunyoung and Kevin’s turn to complete the mission, and they decide to film their back hug on the beach. We’re reminded that Kevin has never dated before. And, boy, does it shine through during the mission. From shouting “Here we go! Ready! Action!” to putting Eunyoung in a headlock essentially and hobbling behind her, Kevin is as green as they come. Eunyoung, who can’t handle the awkwardness, crouches down in embarrassment.
Take Two doesn’t show much improvement, but we’ll take it, if it means we can uncurl our fingers.
The words “Anyways…Mission accomplished” scrolls across the screen. Yes, ANYWAYS. Let’s move on.
“How many times was I kidnapped,” jokes Eunyoung at Kevin’s headlock-style back hug. “The only thing missing was a gun.”
“After watching what we shot, we really seemed like lovers,” says Min Hyuk. “I think when people see it, they’ll think ‘This is a really beautiful couple.’ That’s just my thought.”
We’ll be the judges of that. The other couples have set the bar pretty low, so we’re not expecting much, but we haven’t written this couple off just yet.
The couple plans to film the mission just like the scene in the drama. This could go really well or terribly wrong. But the clouds rolling can’t be a good sign, and soon enough rain begins pouring on the couple, and they’re forced to cut the production short and seek safety in the car.
Once the clouds clear, however, it’s back to the mission. This time around the couple ditches the original plan and Min Hyuk just goes for it. No gimmicks. Then Ye Won turns around for a real hug. And, we squeal. Not from discomfort but because we literally see sparks flying in this moment. We see what you mean, Min Hyuk.
After letting out a huge laugh while recalling the mission, Ye Won says during her interview, “He kept replaying the video in the car, very satisfied with how it came out. I was next to him driving, [and I thought] ‘He really enjoyed our date.’”
More scenes from the couple’s rainy date rolls before Ye Won and Min Hyuk return to base, where Jong Hoon is waiting for them on the porch.
“You’re an hour late! What were you doing?” asks Jong Hoon.
What a killjoy. Just let the happy couple be! But we get it. Unrequited love…sucks.
Jong Hoon’s welcome home for the couple wasn’t so welcoming. Good thing Min Hyuk has N’s open arms to run into.
“I want to go to the beach and talk,” says N to Min Hyuk when he comes into the room. Then scenes of N and Min Hyuk’s budding bromance roll across the screen. From N helping Min Hyuk button up his shirt to poking even, these boys are two peas in a pod.
Moving right along, it’s time for the bus shuffle, where the idols will be seated next to the person who has picked the same seat as them for the duration of the ride to the next location.
The girls take their seats first, and Kevin is the first boy to hop on. We wonder if there will be a part two with either Ji Won and Eunyung, but not this time, as he takes his seat next to G.Na.
Min Hyuk is gets on the bus next. Will Ji Won finally get some face time with Min Hyuk? Or will he go three for three with Ye Won?
Min Hyuk climbs over Ye Won to take the seat next to her then pulls back and plops down next to Ji Won. We should’ve seen that coming.
Jong Hoon and N climb on board together next.
“As I’ve been saying from the beginning, I said Ye Won. Because we haven’t gone on a date, I think I’m waiting for that,” says Jong Hoon. “I think I’m waiting for a fateful meeting with Ye Won.”
Jong Hoon smiles upon seeing where Ye Won is seated, but we soon find out destiny has different plans for the pair, as N takes the seat next to her.
At this point, we’re wondering how two people can be so not destined for one another.
But this is what we call a shuffle, as all of the idols have been paired with a new partner this round.
Jong Hoon lets out a big sigh during his interview, thinking back on the bus shuffle.
Back on the bus, Min Hyuk only has eyes for Ji Won.
“How do I put it? He treats Ji Won unnie and me the same way?” says Ye Won, reflecting on the bus ride. “There was a lot of overlap in how he treated that unnie and how he treated me.”
She continues, “I think they were talking about the necklace, and I heard him say something like, ‘Nuna, you were the person I wanted to have this necklace.’ When I heard that, I didn’t feel good, to be honest.”
We find out that the idols are going to the aquarium, and the staff member explains that the purpose of the trip is for the idols to freely film who they’re interested in for the halftime selection later on that night.
From the time the idols arrive at the aquarium, Jong Hoon’s camera is basically attached to Ye Won’s face.
We wonder who Jong Hoon will pick...
“I tried really hard at the aquarium. Because we had more freedom, I thought, ‘I need to talk to her as much as I can.’”
“Do you think she noticed?” asks a staff member. Jong Hoon doesn’t think so.
“But Jong Hoon definitely seemed to show that he was interested,” says Ye Won. “I think I see that little by little. Because we didn’t spend that much time together [before]. It was weird.”
Everyone knows, Jong Hoon. Even G.Na.
After catching a glimpse of Ye Won and Jong Hoon together, G.Na calls after Jong Hoon with camera in hand, asking, “Are you interested in these things?” Jong Hoon answers yes, and he can’t get out of the shot fast enough, leaving G.Na hanging.
She gets the hint and walks off, saying, “Something’s definitely up.”
“I think this is really cruel,” says G.Na during her interview. “Because I can feel that he already feels differently. Sigh, what is this?”
On the bus ride back, the idols sit wherever they want. Min Hyuk sits next to Ji Won, while Jong Hoon grabs the seat next to Ye Won.
Min Hyuk sleeps the rest of the ride, while Ye Won and Jong Hoon are absorbed in a game.
Back at the guest house, it’s time for the halftime selection.
The girls find out their picks will be revealed first as the girls groas and the boys do their happy dance.
Ji Won’s footage is played first.
“I haven’t made my decision yet. I keep going back and forth between two people. One person was really unexpected, he’s really cool. The other person is really cute and feels like someone younger.”
Cue Ji Won’s footage from the aquarium. As Ji Won hides her face in embarrassment, the camera freezes on Min Hyuk.
“Is this person right, Ji Won?” asks a staff member.
“I think so,” says Ji Won with her face covered.
“I didn’t really care, but I keep getting butterflies,” says Ji Won. “If you look at one way, I’m not being coupled with him, but the fact that I keep thinking about him, like, “Hey, why is he saying this to me? Things like that? I’m really confused. You have a way of making someone feel jumbled up, Min Hyuk.”
Ye Won is up next, and she says, “I feel like I’m going to throw up” before iterating, “Okay, this is only the halftime selection.”
But, of course, we won’t find out who until next week.
We can′t believe it′s time for the halftime selection already. Ji Won′s selection doesn′t come as much of a surprise, and although Jong Hoon′s pick hasn′t been revealed, we′re betting all of our chips on Ye Won.
Ye Won′s and Min Hyuk′s picks, however, are complete toss-ups as they′re both at the center of two overlapping love triangles.
Although Min Hyuk has mentioned Ye Won as his type in the previous episodes, Ji Won has caught his eye as well. And as Ye Won notices Min Hyuk keeping his options open, Ye Won can′t help but look elsewhere as well. Jong Hoon′s undivided attention is certainly making it easier for Ye Won to consider other options.
Although Ye Won is aware that Jong Hoon is interested, however, there′s no guarantee that she will choose Jong Hoon as she hasn′t explicitly stated whether she feels the same way about him.
Still, this leaves G.Na the odd woman out, as she has just begun warming up to Jong Hoon but quickly catches on to the fact that he only has eyes for Ye Won.
If the idols from the first season more or less went with the flow, letting "destiny" run its course, the idols this time around are definitely being more proactive, and those who are clear about what they want are going for it.
Interestingly enough, Ye Won and Jong Hoon both mentioned in the beginning that they came to the island with a mission, to take someone back to Seoul, so it′ll be interesting to see if they can make it happen, whether it be with each other or someone else.
Will the idols let destiny decide for them or will they decide their own destiny?
