Weekly Roundup: Celebrity Rise and Fall
If last week is any indication of what’s to come in the New Year, 2012 may be the boys’ year. Boy bands, new and old, dominated our ‘Stars on the Rise’ list this week, from SM’s highly-anticipated group EXO to B2ST and g.o.d.
While the end of the year means award shows and music festivals galore in Korea, it wasn’t smooth sailing for MBC, who received flak for its new award system when it awarded I Am A Singer, not Yoo Jae Suk, the grand prize. Meanwhile, idol stars Lee Gi Kwang and Lee Seung Gi reminded us that they’re still human and twin actresses caused double trouble.
Here’s our roundup of the week’s celebrity highs and lows.
Stars on the Rise
SM Entertainment had us on the edge of our seats all last week as it revealed more information about the members of its upcoming idol group EXO. Following the release of a teaser video featuring member Kai, SM unveiled members Lu Han and Tao, who, most notably, stunned fans with his impressive martial arts skills, and Chen. The four members also performed at the SBS Music Awards this year, alongside their SM label mates, heightening fans’ interest in the group and its other members.
From recently wrapping up successful concerts with their Cube Entertainment label mates in Brazil and Britain to convincing kids that school uniforms are cool, the boys of B2ST showed no signs of slowing down, announcing it would be setting off on a 21-city world tour in 2012. But they made sure to end 2011 with a bang, beating out K-Pop favorites IU and Girls’ Generation to take home the Song of the Year Award at the KBS Music Festival for hit Fiction.
3. Kim Jae Joong and Kim Junsu
Kim Jae Joong may have spent Christmas alone this year, but the JYJ member proved he’s no Grinch, not only making a hefty donation of 50 million won to his alma mater but penning hand-written notes to his juniors as well. Fellow JYJ member Kim Junsu also spread some holiday cheer this winter season, building a much needed school in a remote part of Cambodia.
4. Old school favorites
The New Year may mean more debuts and a fresh batch of idol groups to obsess over (see number 1); however, let’s not forget about the oldies but goodies of K-Pop. Not only did we see Kim Tae Woo take the plunge and a g.o.d reunion last week, group Koyote and singer Lexy of Baby Boy- and Let Me Dance-fame announced their comebacks.
Stars Falling Flat
1. MBC Entertainment Awards
The award show announced it would be changing its award system this year, granting grand prizes to pieces of work and not individuals (i.e. Yoo Jae Suk), to the dismay of netizens. Yoo Jae Suk fans cried out in protest when this year’s grand prize was awarded to I Am A Singer; however, the comedian fared much better at the SBS Entertainment Awards, taking home the top honor.
2. Lee Gi Kwang
It seems the singer, who stretched a tendon in his right ankle while exercising and was seen wheeling himself around in a wheelchair at the United Cube Concert in Brazil, has not recovered from the injury as he was seen sitting during B2ST’s performance at the KBS Music Festival. We can appreciate a guy who hits the gym, but these idol singers need to take it easy.
3. Lee Seung Gi
Last week, we learned that even the picture perfect Lee Seung Gi makes mistakes. In a letter addressed to actress Lim Jung Eun, the singer and MC accidentally misread the word ‘volpum (which means appearance)’ as ‘volume (which, in Korea, is often used interchangeably with the word “voluptuous”)’ on Strong Heart, drawing laughter from the guests and audience much to Lee’s embarrassment. It’s okay, we still love you.
4. Twin actresses
Twin actresses, identified only by their initials, were charged with assaulting a taxi driver while intoxicated. Although netizens initially assumed the twins to be trot duo Wink, the twins’ agency immediately cleared up the rumor and set things straight.
