Fans were in for a pleasant surprise this week as Kim Jae Joong announced the upcoming release of his first solo album, while Han Ga In finally made her decision to call BH Entertainment her new home.

KBS faced some major drama on its set due to conflicts with an actors’ union, while T-ara became embattled once more in controversy, this time over allegations of hypocrisy.

Stars on the Rise

1. JYJ’s Kim Jae Joong Announces First Solo Album

JYJ’s Kim Jae Joong sent fans into a tizzy after he announced the coming release of his first solo album.

Following in the heels of his group mate, Kim Junsu, Kim Jae Joong announced his solo album will drop in January and would be a true rock album, even enlisting Kim Bada of the legendary rock band Sinawe for the album.

2. Tiger JK, Yoon Mirae, Block B, Juniel Invited to France’s Midem

K-Pop showed no signs of slowing down in 2013 as it was revealed that a slew of K-Pop acts had been invited to perform next month at Midem (Marché International du Disque et de l′Edition Musicale), the world’s largest annual trade fair for the music industry.

Taking the stage in between January 26 and January 29 at Cannes, France next month will be Tiger JK, Yoon Mirae, Block B and Juniel.

Music industry insiders, artists and associates from some 75 different countries are expected to attend the event, further extending the scope and reach of K-Pop in the world.

3. Han Ga In Joins BH Entertainment

To say Han Ga In had a successful year would be an understatement with her MBC drama The Sun and the Moon becoming one of the year’s most watched dramas and her movie, Architecture 101, becoming one of the year’s most watched movies.

Thus, when she became a free agent a few months ago, she was coveted by all the major agencies who were eager to sign her on into their respective companies.

This past week, however, Han Ga In finally made her decision by joining BH Entertainment.

She will now join other mega stars such as Lee Byung Hun, Go Soo and Han Hyo Joo in calling the agency her home.

Stars Falling Flat

1. T-ara Comes Under Fire for Advertising Popular Game Used for Gambling

After a turmoil-filled past year, T-ara was seemingly mending its image, even drawing praise for its recent deicision to turn down lucrative endorsement deals for alcohol drinks and saying it would continue to do so in the future due to the potential influence the group could have on youths.

However, their good act quickly became accused of being ingenuous after it was revealed the group was promoting a popular gambling game machine in Japan..

Critics accused T-ara of being hypocritical in turning down alcohol endorsement deals because of the potential influence the group could have on youth but holding no qualms with endorsing gambling games.

2. ‘My Daughter Seo Young’ Temporarily Cancels Filming From Pay Dispute

A long brewing issue over pay between KBS and the Korean Broadcast Actors union (KBAU) brewed over this past week to the point that filming for the mega-popular drama My Daughter Seo Young was temporarily cancelled.

KBAU held a strike against KBS, alleging the broadcasting station owed some 1.3 billion won to the union’s actors, and with both sides unable to reach an agreement, shooting was cancelled for December 18.

My Daughter Seo Young was only one of KBS’ many shows that were at the center of the dispute, but both KBS and KBAU have seemingly ironed out their differences for now with My Daughter Seo Young fans able to catch the drama as usual.

3. Lee Jong Seok Falls Victim to Fake Facebook Account

Lee Jong Seok became the latest celebrity to have a fake SNS account attributed to him.

The actor wrote on his me2day on December 18 saying, “I don’t do Facebook. If I catch you, I’ll kill you”, revealing fake Facebook accounts attributed to him were being seen online.

Though some criticized his words as being a bit excessive, many expressed their hopes that the perpetrators would voluntarily shut down the fake accounts as the growing issue with celebrities continues to affect more stars.
