[Recap: The King of Dramas] Episode 13 – The Man in the Flames
Is it officially beginning?
After 12 episodes, the romance is finally starting to blossom before our eyes! That took even longer than it took for the drama within the drama to start.
The love story better be as good as the time we had to wait.
Maybe it’s a good thing that The King of Dramas is getting a two-episode extension.
Shock falls upon Go Eun and she watches Mina kissing Anthony, who eventually pulls her away. Mina challenges him, asking if he’s being truthful when he says he has absolutely not feelings.
She doesn’t want him to try to forget her.
“I’ll wait for you, but don’t keep me waiting for too long.”
She turns to leave, as Anthony looks out to the landscape again.
But instead of the landscape, he spots Go Eun watching him. She bolts to hide, and when she peeks up to check if he’s still watching, he’s still watching.
She stumbles into her studio, slipping on the show, as Anthony continues to watch, a smile carefully dancing around his face (or maybe we’re just imagining it).
It’s only when she’s inside the studio that Go Eun realizes she has no reasons to hide. It’s not her business if they like each other or not. She struggles to sleeping, wondering what Anthony’s relationship is with Mina.
In the morning, Go Eun is woken up by Dong Suk, who has something to give before heading to the countryside for the drama shoot. He presents her with a giant poster of The Morning of Gyeongseong, framed and beautiful.
The Wonder Boys chipped in to present it to Go Eun since it’s her first project. He suggests that she do this for each drama she writes and Go Eun is so surprised and moved by the gift.
But after seeing Mina’s face on the poster, she asks about Anthony’s relationship with Mina.
Dong Suk explains that it was Anthony who basically raised Mina into a top star. Then Dong Suk gets all quiet and asks if Go Eun heard about the rumor that Mina and Anthony were dating.
Go Eun’s intrigued and leans in to hear Dong Suk’s story, when Anthony comes in, asking what the two were talking about.
Go Eun looks away.
“Is that your hobby – to spy on other people?” asks Anthony. Go Eun makes up excuses, saying at night, two people looks like one and even if they’re far apart, they look really close.
Anthony has a small twinkle in his eye. He tells her to get ready to go out.
Anthony takes Go Eun to a fancy restaurant, perfected with a bottle of expensive wine and steak, but Go Eun asks why they’re drinking in the middle of the day and asks if it’s some kind of day.
Anthony says he’s always wanted to bring her out to a place like this; He just couldn’t afford it.
Something smells fishy.
He continues, admitting that there were probably a lot of things Go Eun was upset about with Anthony and he encourages her to continue working hard with her writing.
Go Eun doesn’t suspect anything, as Anthony says he’ll send her to Europe after the drama is over. She gets all excited.
“Oh yeah…by the way, we have to re-sign your contract.”
We knew there was a catch.
Go Eun realizes right away why Anthony was being so kind, unlike his evil self.
She tells him not to live like that, and Anthony rebuts that Go Eun wouldn’t have gotten this far without him.
Sick of Anthony’s trickery, she slams her knife and fork down and leaves the table. Anthony sneers, having failed his brilliant plan.
But poor Go Eun has left her cellphone behind and it’s Anthony who picks it up.
It’s another production company that wants to work with Go Eun next time. Anthony nonchalantly laughs, informing the company that Go Eun has already signed the contract with World Productions for the next ten years. He tells the man that he is Go Eun’s older brother and not to call anymore.
And of course, who is standing behind Anthony with an annoyed face, having come back to the table to retrieve her cellphone?
Anthony silently hands Go Eun the phone back and Go Eun once again stomps away.
Hyun Min gently caresses Spider Man’s head as Bitna whines about how Hyun Min was not supposed to have a kiss scene in the drama. He tries to reason with her that he’s just acting, but Bitna’s sure that Mina isn’t.
“Then you think I’ve dated every actress that I kissed?” asks Hyun Min, who turns the attention to Kwang Soo to back him up.
Bitna glares at Kwang Soo for a straight answer, as Hyun Min signals Kwang Soo behind Bitna’s back to just go with the story. Kwang Soo manages to stutter a lie.
Falling for Hyun Min’s tricks again, Bitna wonders if these are the woes of being a top actor’s girlfriend.
“I won’t deny that,” replies Hyun Min.
The Agency CEO and Kwang Soo roll their eyes and look away.
At the gym, Mina is walking the treadmill (she has fantastic abs, by the way), thinking about how Anthony admitted that he did like her. She smiles just thinking about it.
Not everyone is happy, as Jin Wan asks the Chairman why he suddenly canceled his lawsuit against Anthony.
Remembering what his father said about paying his way into his position, Woon Hyung stresses as it goes against everything he believes in.
Later in the evening, Anthony visits his mother, who tells him not to worry about her since she’s doing fine, watching Anthony’s dramas.
His mother shares that a nurse mentioned that the pretty lady that came to the hospital with him last time. Anthony laughs, mentioning the nurse needs to get glasses.
He tells his mom that it’s the drama writer, and his mom is somewhat disappointed.
“Before I close my eyes, you’ll show me your other half right?”
Anthony nods, but tells her that it’ll be awhile, so she has to stay healthy until then.
Still irked by Anthony’s older brother charade, Go Eun takes out her anger on the poor fish, but luckily Go Eun’s mom comes to save the day, smacking Go Eun on the back.
She sits down and asks who Kim Bong Dal is, since after her, it’s the person Go Eun wants to thank next. Go Eun sneers that Kim Bong Dal isn’t actually a person to be thankful for.
But while on the topic of thanking people, Go Eun’s mom suggests that she prepare a meal for the staff and cast. Go Eun likes the thought. Go Eun’s mom says she’ll prepare the food and borrow a truck from the butcher across the street. Go Eun just has to find a driver from World Productions.
Go Eun asks Hee Jae, who is more than glad to be the driver. Out of nowhere, Anthony says that Hee Jae was supposed to run an errand the next day. Hee Jae’s confused, but one shot of Anthony’s glare sets him up straight.
Anthony remarks that everyone is busy so he must drive their writer to the drama set. He adds that if he’s driving the soon-to-be pillar for World Productions, he should be prepared to even run a tank.
Go Eun sneers at Anthony and once again asks Hee Jae to drive. Anthony quickly permits Hee Jae to be the driver.
The next day, things are busy at the restaurant as ajummas gather to make food together.
When the food is all prepared, Go Eun check in on Hee Jae, but uh oh. Hee Jae can’t come because he’s on his way to see his grandmother, who slipped on the icy road.
Of course, it’s all a scheme by Anthony, praises Hee Jae and gives him the day off. He reminds the World Boys about their excuses and tells them, they must sign Go Eun.
Go Eun’s not too ecstatic about being in a truck for hours with her ‘older brother,’ and Anthony’s equally as happy when he sees the poop-mobile that he will be driving.
On their way to the set, he apologizes for lying, saying he was protecting Go Eun from a bad company. Go Eun asks Anthony to tell the truth just once – that he doesn’t want to let her go and wants to continue working with her.
Anthony says it’s just as she says, so she should just sign with them.
He adds that she needs to work with Director Goo again.
Go Eun starts to wonder why Director Goo hasn’t worked on something for the past five hours and asks what happened, since Anthony worked with him on the last project. Anthony suddenly gets quiet and the plays dumb about it, returning to the subject of re-signing.
On the set of the drama, Hyun Min and Mina play out a dramatic scene where the lovers are running away. Hyun Min wraps a scarf around her neck to keep her warm, then his dislike for her pops up and he proceeds to gently choke her like a crazy man.
Mina doesn’t step back and tightens the scarf’s grip on Hyun Min’s hand.
Director Goo stops the filming and asks to speak to both of the actors.
He pulls them aside and firmly scolds them as the worst actors he’s ever had to work with, shocking Hyun Min and Mina.
“You two only have brilliant outer layers. You have no regards or passion for the project, the suffering staff - you’re just cheap celebrities!”
The last comment shocks Mina, but Director Goo stands his ground, stating that he’s been waiting and waiting for the two to come around, but they haven’t and aren’t even trying.
“Aren’t you embarrassed to be actors? Aren’t you embarrassed to even face those extras or staff members who get paid 1/100 - no 1/1000 of what you get?”
Director Goo tells them to think about why they wanted to be an actor. Until then, there will be no filming.
Frustrated and guilt-ridden, Mina storms away as Hyun Min lets out a sigh.
All the extras take their rest as Director Goo looks around, stressed.
After thinking hard about the situation, Hyun Min decides that he should do something. He tells the Agency CEO that he will convince Mina and apologize to the director.
“As the landmarking of this drama, I can’t just watch a problem grow.”
The Agency CEO corrects Hyun Min that it’s landmark, and not landmarking... but Hyun Min insists that landmarking is so much cooler, because it has king at the end of it (*rolls eyes).
He hops out of the van to go persuade Mina, when he finds Mina already outside of his van.
Before Hyun Min can even open his mouth, Mina suggests that they make up, go apologize, and not fight about stupid things anymore. Hyun Min is left speechless.
Meanwhile, Anthony and Go Eun are lost in the middle of the news.
Go Eun has a map in her hand, and Anthony bickers that if the car had a GPS system, they wouldn’t have gotten lost (Our question: why didn’t they just use their cellphones as a GPS?).
Anthony and Go Eun bicker at whose fault it is for getting lost. Go Eun says she knew Anthony was just being nice to her to get her signed, and almost immediately, Anthony becomes an innocent lamb.
They finally decide to go back where they came from, but this time, the truck won’t start. Anthony glares at Go Eun, asking if it’s still his fault. Go Eun avoids his eyes and checks her phone - no signal (still think they could have used the phone GPS up until it died).
Handyman Anthony gets out of the truck and fixes the car and Go Eun hops out to see how he’s doing.
He reaches for the door to open, but what do you know - locked. Go Eun’s side, also locked.
Anthony lets out a “Oh sh!t!” as Go Eun realizes that their cellphones are also inside.
Oh sh!t is right.
Back on the set, Hyun Min and Mina go to apologize to the director.
Mina opens her mouth first, and just as Hyun Min tries to add his own thing, Mina interrupts him, promising that they’ll work together. Hyun Min gets ready to say something, when Mina does it again.
Director Goo thanks Mina for the apology and praises her as a good actress. Then he turns to Hyun Min and asks why he didn’t say anything. Mina even answers for Hyun Min, saying they have the same thing in mind.
Director Goo understands and announces the start of filming, leaving Hyun Min speechless. So much for the landmarking.
“This feels kind of weird,” says Hyun Min. “Like I was beat to a pulp while sleeping, but I’m not sure if it was real or just a dream.”
The Agency CEO doesn’t understand, and neither does Hyun Min. “I just feel like I was wronged with my eyes open.”
Director Goo asks what happened to the meal truck and Dong Suk informs that Go Eun is coming up with Anthony.
Hyun Min is quite amused by the news that Anthony is coming up. Dong Suk calls to check where they are.
Go Eun and Anthony are lost in the middle of nowhere and not picking up their phones.
Dong Suk informs everyone that they’re not answering, and Hyun Min is suspicious to why both of them aren’t answering.
Why would Anthony drive the food truck with Go Eun.
Mina tries to defend Anthony, but Hyun Min says they must have something going on. Anthony has worked way too hard for Go Eun for each issue that has come up with this project.
“They must like each other,” laughs Hyun Min as Mina grows darker by the second.
Go Eun huddles next to the giant soup container in the back of the truck, urging Anthony to come. He refuses, because it’s just not cool.
Moments later though, Anthony hugs the container with Go Eun, trying to take the remaining warmth from it. Go Eun shivers as she smiles at Anthony’s quick change of heart.
But even the soup container has a limit and it becomes no longer useful.
Realizing that they might freeze to death, Anthony hesitantly suggests holding each other for body warmth - it’s really the only way to survive.
But they both make sure to point out that they’re not happy doing it. It’s all for survival. They embrace each other as a million thoughts swarm in their heads. They conclude that it is a bit better.
The staff grows wary, finding out that it’s been hours since Go Eun and Anthony left Seoul. Director Goo tells Hyun Min and Mina to go rest up, while the rest of them go search for the missing two.
Inside the truck, Go Eun and Anthony lie side by side, with a plastic tablecloth as their blanket.
Go Eun apologizes because it’s all her fault, and even then, Anthony says if she’s really sorry, she should re-signs. She laughs and agrees to do so.
In an effort to keep warm, Go Eun suggests thinking about warm things. She picks sweet potatoes and Anthony scoffs that out of all the things in the world, she picks sweet potatoes.
She argues back that sweet potatoes are so warm and if you’re not careful, it’ll burn the roof of your mouth. She adds that she wants her mother’s warm embrace, which Anthony repeats silently.
Go Eun proceeds to ask Anthony about his mom. Anthony replies that even though she’s blind, she always knew when he came to visit.
She goes onto asking about America and if it was cold.
He says he never had time to examine the cold because he was busy trying to make it out alive after leaving his poor mother alone in Korea.
“I sold my soul to the devil,” says Anthony. “So I ran towards the goal like crazy to become successful.”
“Your mom could have wanted it too. For you to get success even if it was like that.” adds Go Eun, putting a weak smile on Anthony’s face.
Go Eun starts to doze off, and Anthony pulls her in closer to keep her body warm.
In the morning, Go Eun and Anthony wake up to a loud rumbling sound (they survived the night!). They peer outside and see a man, who asks why they slept in the middle of a street in the cold. He tells them to move their car so his tractor can pass.
The staff cancels shooting for the day to find Anthony and Go Eun. Just then, Dong Suk spots them in the distance, headed their way.
Everyone rushes over and asks what happens. As Anthony explains that the car broke down, Hyun Min notices a faint lipstick stain on Anthony’s chest.
Everyone’s heads start rolling as Hyun Min shrieks that they must have held each other all night. Just the thought of it makes Anthony and Go Eun cringe as they wave their hands, indicating no.
Director Goo sends the two to warm themselves up as Hyun Min continues to laugh in glee. Mina starts to simmer in jealousy.
When Hyun Min tries to gain support from Mina, she barks at him and stomps away, leaving Hyun Min confused of what he did wrong.
But it doesn’t kill his mood, as he continues laugh, believing that his theory that Anthony and Go Eun like each other is true.
As Go Eun and Anthony snuggle in their separate beds, they each think about what the conversation they exchanged with each other about Anthony’s mom.
In Seoul, Woon Hyung stops by the office of the SBC Chairman’s office, asking if Woon Hyung’s father had a hand in his promotion.
The SBC Chairman falls silent, and then asks, “What about it?”
Without another word, Woon Hyung pulls out a letter of resignation, saying he cannot take the position as the chief director. As Woon Hyung turns to leave, the SBC Chairman comments that the position is not somewhere anyone can climb and that it’s he who decided to put Woon Hyung there.
But Woon Hyung still leaves the letter of resignation and exits the room
The rumor gets around quickly as Deputy Manager Kim and Park discuss Woon Hyung’s letter of resignation.
Jin Wan is informed of the news, saying that Deputy Manager Kim would become the sub for Chief Director. The SBC Chairman informs the Jaekuk Chairman of what Woon Hyung did, causing his father’s face to fall.
Go Eun finally serves the food that her mom made to the staff. When Hyun Min comes to get his serving, Go Eun finds him with a big grin on his face.
“Tell me the truth... who hugged who first?” His eyes twinkle like a little elementary kid waiting for Santa Claus. Go Eun denies, but he eggs on.
“It was you who hugged him tightly first!” He starts to giggle as Go Eun attempts to steal the food back from his tray. He teases her red face (“It’s from the cold!”) and then makes a kissy face before making his exit
The new female FD, Eun Jin, sits down to eat in front of Director Goo, who asks why she has a yogurt drink when no one else does. They all turn to the serving staff, as Dong Suk adorably smiles, holding up his own yogurt drink. Hehehe, he is so cute.
Following their meals, Mina and Anthony are sipping on some coffee by the fire, when Mina decides to test the waters.
She mentions that Go Eun is a pretty decent person, serving food to the staff. Anthony tells Mina to keep an eye on her, since Go Eun will become a top writer one day.
“Just as a writer?” asks Mina. Anthony asks what else?
But Mina notices the way Anthony stares at her, and she’s still feeling uneasy.
Just then, an elderly man approaches Anthony, introducing himself as an extra who has worked on eight of Anthony’s projects. He graciously thanks Anthony for always giving him the opportunity to fulfill his dreams of being an actor.
Anthony is kind to the old man as he limps away, loudly coughing. Anthony watches with concerned eyes.
Shooting begins and Go Eun watches on the set for the second time, after she was forced to that one time many years ago. She eyes Anthony, who replies that she didn’t have her own chair back then.
The more Anthony and Go Eun explain happy conversation, the more Mina’s face gets pouty. It also doesn’t help that Hyun Min is trying to coax a jealous Bitna, who gets angrier by the second when she hears Mina’s voice in the background.
When a female staff member comes to ready the actors, Bitna exclaims that there’s another women on set and is about to throw a fit. Hyun Min quickly ends the conversation and hangs up, slightly annoyed.
He complains under his breath that Mina won’t even let him talk on the phone.
The extras are given instruction on which directions to enter the frame, as the elderly man continues to cough painfully.
The camera starts rolling and as the elderly man passes through, he stops right in front of Hyun Min and Mina and coughs off a storm.
The manager in charge of the extras pulls the elderly man away as Anthony watches in concert.
Despite apologies from the old man, the manager scolds him and gives the role to a younger extra.
The younger extra tells the elderly man to find shelter somewhere warm until the bus to Seoul arrives. The man continues to cough.
The shooting is completed and the staff prepare for the ending scene, which includes a warehouse that catches on fire.
Director Goo stares at the script with much worry in his eyes. At the same time, Anthony watches for Director Goo’s reaction.
During his break time, Hyun Min calls Bitna to inform her how many scenes he has left. He sees Mina headed his way, and in an effort to avoid her, he walks into an old building.
As he continues to explain to Bitna that he has to work with Mina, a man coughs. The old man is sleeping on the ground.
Hyun Min tries to wake him up, saying he can’t sleep there, when another phone call from Bitna distracts him and he leaves the building with the man inside.
Preparing for the fire scene, Anthony checks with the safety procedures with Dong Suk, who actually forgot to call a fire truck just in case. Anthony yells at Dong Suk to call them over this instant since it’s one thing he shouldn’t forget.
Mina joins Anthony and Go Eun and suggests that Anthony stay until she finishes up her scenes. Go Eun’s face falls, but Anthony says he has to go after this one scene.
Mina forces a smile, and then asks Go Eun to go back home with her. Go Eun awkwardly responds positively. Anthony watches the preparation of the filming, not noticing the tension between the two ladies.
Dong Suk tells Anthony that the fire truck will be coming in ten minutes, as the filming starts. The staff sets the building on fire and the camera rolls.
People run around the building on fire, Hyun Min included.
He turns to the burning building and suddenly realizes that the elderly man is still inside.
In a moment of shock, Hyun Min leaves his character, putting the shoot on hold. The director asks what’s wrong, and Hyun Min screams that someone’s inside the building.
The extras realize it’s the old man and Anthony becomes alert.
Director Goo frantically asks about the fire truck, but it won’t come until a few minutes later.
The building starts to fall apart.
Realizing there’s no time to waste, Anthony marches into the fire, with Go Eun yelling for him.
This episode played out pretty stereotypical storylines with car door locking our characters out (It made us remember Choi Daniel and Hwang Jung Eum in High Kick) or the old man trapped in a burning building.
It was very obvious, but we still went on for the ride, because it marked two pretty important events.
Go Eun and Anthony finally get closer (figuratively and literally) and Anthony finally kicks his statistics to the curb and actually goes into the fire, a situation that’s not calculated.
That’s one small step and one giant leap for Anthony, since at the beginning, he was a conceited, self-absorbed man, who didn’t care about the well-being of anyone if they got in the way of the drama.
We want to say it was Go Eun who finally tamed the beast and made him into a decent man, but at the same time, we’re wondering what happened with Director Goo five years ago.
Director Goo was especially stressed while looking over the fire scene and then completely frantic when he finds out that someone is inside the burning building.
Perhaps the cause of Director Goo’s five-year hiatus was some kind of traumatic event that happened on the set.
What could get more traumatic than an elderly man being burned to death right in front of your eyes?
We’re slowly changing our opinions on the Chairman.
He may be an evil, evil man, but in front of his son, he’s just a sweet old daddy, who wants nothing but the best. The look on his face when he finds out that Woon Hyung turns in his letter of resignation was just sad that it actually tugged on our heartstrings….just a little.
But speaking of Woon Hyung, we wonder what will happen.
How can Anthony and Go Eun function without Woon Hyung in power to make sure their drama doesn’t go down the toilet?
And can you imagine if Deputy Manager Kim gets to be in charge?
Totally dictatorship, if you ask us. The man’s already corrupt enough as it is.
Or are we just being cynical?
