[MAMA] The Big 3 Make a Big Showing at ′2012 MAMA′
Asia’s hottest stars all headed to Hong Kong for the 2012 Mnet Asian Music Awards (MAMA), bringing together some of the most passionate fans in the world and the celebrities that induce such admirable fandom.
There were many winners, but few could argue that the most visible artists of the night came from the famed Big 3.
YG, SM and JYP all made huge showings at the 2012 MAMA, with a slew of SM artists taking to the stage, including a joint performance from SHINee and EXO, as well as the indomitable Super Junior.
The latter group drove the fans crazy all night, with even short captures of their face on the big screen causing the crowd to burst out into ear-splitting screams. Super Junior also got the most songs in, performing Spy, Mr. Simple and Sexy, Free & Single, getting pretty much everyone to scream out in what seemed like pre-planned fan chants.
Of course, JYP’s main representative was the Asian Soul himself, Mister Park Jin Young, who shared part of his stage with 2PM’s Jang Woo Young. The JYP artists weren’t as successful in the awards arena, but the two men still managed to put on one of the sexiest performances of the night, with a mash-up of JYP’s You’re the Only One and Jang Woo Young’s Sexy Lady.
YG Entertainment’s head honcho wasn’t at the awards, but his biggest stars were all there, swooping up a total of nine awards.
The newest YG artist, Lee Hi, proved she was the star rookie of the year, with a short performance of It’s Cold, which led into Epik High’s rambunctious performance of Don’t Hate Me which featured members Tablo, Mithra Jin and DJ Tukutz as famous villains.
And of course, the man who made the world dance to Gangnam Style, Psy, was a huge winner, taking home four awards. Although Psy’s flashmob performance of his megahit was by all rights a hit, it was clear that the mostly young crowd was most excited for Big Bang and its frontman G-Dragon.
The group led with performances of G-Dragon’s hit Crayon, with the leader popping up to join his groupmates for a performance of Fantastic Baby, which literally got the stadium shaking. It was clear that the group, which has been touring for nearly a year, knew how to get the crowd started, putting a truly ‘One of a Kind’ performance.
If the reaction from the crowd at the 2012 MAMA is any indication, the Big 3 will have another fantastic, sexy year.
