[Star of the Week] The Evolution of Epik High From Schoolboy Cool to Too Cool for School
Set to release its seventh album under new label YG Entertainment, Epik High fans have taken notice of the group’s new YG-fied image as revealed through recently released images of the group’s single It’s Cold and album jacket.
Although YG’s artists are known for their originality, when we first caught a glimpse of the bronzed Epik High members, dripping in chains and leather, we couldn’t help but get the impression that they looked a little out of their element—like a son trying on his father’s suit, shall we say?
This, however, inspired us to look back on some of Epik High’s old photos, and upon reflecting on the members’ old school getups, we’ve decided the boys have come a long way image-wise.
A comparison of Epik High’s album covers (those where they show face, at least) reveal that the member count is the only thing that hasn’t changed about the group physically.
We think Mithra Jin, in particular, cleaned up nicely since the group’s second and third album days, when he seemed to think wild was the way to go.
Before G-Dragon’s seaweed hair, there was…this.
Tablo’s tangled mullet and Mithra Jin’s Raggedy Ann-inspired ‘dos have our stomachs in knots.
Tukutz has, unfortunately, also fallen victim to the mullet before.
However, a turning point in the Epik High members’ image came when Mithra Jin and Tukutz entered the army.
You know what they say – the army will make men out of boys.
They also say marriage changes you, but who knew it could turn rappers into flower boys?
Now all we have left to do is wait for someone to tame the bearded beast that is Mithra Jin.
Do you like Epik High’s new-and-improved(?) image? Or have they lost that distinct, nerdy-cool Epik High quality? Share in the comments below!
