Former DJ DOC member Park Jung Hwan issued an official statement about his slander case against Lee Ha Neul and Kim Chang Ryul.

Through an official press release on November 17, Park stated, “I did not leave the team because, like Kim Chang Ryul and Lee Ha Neul said on television, I was ‘beat-deaf’. I was actually forced to leave against my will.”

He added, “Before I heard that broadcast, I was thinking of settling peacefully and I was thinking of leaving behind the ill feelings. But due to their insincere apology I have no more intention of forgiving them.

He wrapped up his official statement saying, “I hope that this incident will come to the strict judgment of the law, and I hope that the two, who are nearing their forties, from now at least shed their old image as bad boys and think of showing consideration toward others.”

Lee Ha Neul and Kim Chang Ryul appeared on the November 3 broadcast of KBS2’s Happy Together and joked that Park Jung Hwan left the team because he was beat-deaf. At this Park sued both Lee Ha Neul and Kim Chang Ryul on November 15, claiming “this is an act of defamation with false information against an individual done just for the fun of the program.”

Kim Chang Ryul and Lee Ha Neul then appeared on the SBS Power FM radio show Kim Chang Ryul’s Old School to apologize, saying, “We didn’t mean to make fun on purpose. We were just trying to make the situation more interesting; we’re sorry. Let’s talk it over between friends.”

This is Park Jung Hwan, former leader of DJ DOC. I left behind my career as a singer 17 years ago, and I am currently living my life as an ordinary person.

I did not leave the team because, like Kim Chang Ryul and Lee Ha Neul said on television, I was ‘beat-deaf’. I was actually forced to leave against my will, and I only have painful memories of when, even though I wished to continue as a member, I was unable to do so because of the conflict existing within the group.

But because I had worked in the team with all my passion and with everything in my life at stake, I tried to forget my resentment rather than continue to point fingers and hurt others and myself, trying to believe that it was a proud memory of my youth, to feel a vicarious satisfaction watching the group stay strong without disbanding. And so I thought proudly of my DJ DOC days, reflecting only upon the good memories I had.

There are stories being told about why I left the group, so I will be telling the story of what happened then. While we were promoting our first studio album, Jung Jae Yong was confirmed as a new team member without my knowledge, and Jung Jae Yong, Lee Ha Neul and Kim Chang Ryul had already finished recording the first single for their second studio album, Murphy’s Law. I had never even imagined such a thing could happen, and I had no choice. My last schedule was the group’s last for the first album, a fansigning at my hometown, Busan.

In the middle of the fansigning I was surprised and shocked when they introduced the first single for their second studio album, Murphy’s Law. And on that spot they even announced that Jung Jae Yong was to be their new member. In that moment I was so shocked, I was at a loss for words, and even thinking of that moment now makes me feel terrible. Because they had never told me anything about this, it was even more shocking. And so I was forced to leave the team.

I am currently not a singer, nor am I a celebrity. Because of this I have no personal issues involved in this slander case. I just hoped they would stop such small minded acts as a favor toward their former fellow member, and I didn’t want to be a victim like I was back then.

A few days ago Lee Ha Neul called me to say they were going to hold a press conference but that in the end they decided they would apologize openly in a public broadcast. Even before that call I had been offended by the calls and text messages which had a tone as if they were scolding me for making a problem out of something that wasn’t a big deal. I couldn’t feel any sincerity in Ha Neul’s voice telling me that he would apologize in a broadcast, but I listened to the broadcast because they did say they would apologize. But after that broadcast I was angered even more.

I was shocked to hear that there was no sincerity in the apology, and that as if to tease me they would say things like “If you settle everything we’ll get you a car!!” and “You were beat-deaf.” I also want to bring up the issue of how SBS could produce such a personal broadcast for an individual’s benefit where there was originally no such thing planned. Before I heard that broadcast, I was thinking of settling it peacefully and I was thinking of leaving behind the ill feelings. But due to their insincere apology I have no more intention of forgiving them. After reading an article stating that a few years ago they had appeared on another broadcast to put me down with even harsher words, I felt even more regret.

I hope that this incident will come to the strict judgment of the law, and I hope that the two, who are nearing their forties, from now at least shed their old image as bad boys and think of showing consideration toward others.
