Mnet M Countdown’s new MC Lee Hong Gi will be saying hello with a special performance of songs that represent the Korean wave.

The singer has shown his love for M Countdown by painting his nails for the occasion, and now he will even sing his joy in a special MC performance meant to announce his arrival to the show.

The first special performance will be one of BoA’s No. 1 in an acoustic version put together by Lee Hong Gi himself. No. 1 is the first Korean song ever to make it to the top of Japan’s Oricon Chart, and marked the start of the K-Pop boom which spreads through the world now.

He will then sing a hip-hop version of TVXQ’s (DBSK) Mirotic and a rock version of Shin Seung Hoon’s ballad I Believe. The new arrangement of I Believe is especially gathering interest on how it will turn out as the mood of the mellow song is expected to change completely.

MC Lee Hong Gi’s arrival isn’t the only change that will be coming to M Countdown this week. The show will start ranking singers based on completely different criteria.

The show held a roundtable debate with the Korea Singers’ Association, the Korea Entertainment Producers’ Association, KMP Holdings, expert journalists and other K-Pop related figures on August 22 to decide on the new standards, and used the ideas that came up during the debate to implement new changes. Music downloads and streaming will count for more, while fan votes will have less influence.

Director Han Dong Chul of Mnet said, “We will continue to develop and make it a chart that reflects K-Pop trends and the effort of producers and signers.”

The day’s episode of M Countdown, which will air on August 30, will feature performances by B.A.P, Solbi, Super Junior, Eru, ZE:A, Kara, Tiny G, Tasty and more.
