Will Hyun Bin be Posted to a PR Unit?
Hyun Bin, who serves in the Marine Corps, left Baeknyeong Island where he served as a combat infantryman in the 6th brigade. His brigade reportedly prepared a farewell party for Hyun Bin, who was scheduled to leave on October 31 for vacation.
Insiders with the brigade prepared to install a movie screen inside the unit to watch the film Transformer3 along with Hyun Bin during the farewell party.
However, due to the bad weather, the ship loaded with equipment and people who in charge of installing the equipment did not come to the island on time. Hyun left for vacation on schedule, and the unit held the screening of the movie without Hyun on November 2. An insider with the brigade said, “Originally we planned to have a special occasion all together with Hyun, watching the movie, but unit members had to soothe their sadness without him.”
After coming back from a week-long vacation, Hyun is likely to be reassigned to another unit. An official stated, “In the first place, the Corp was going to assign him to a public relations unit, but he was dispatched to Baeknyeong Island due to his willingness to serve as a combat infantry man and due to public opinion. Since he helped to boost the image of military by visiting Indonesia as a special envoy and he will have many things to do for promotion work for military, he is likely to be posted to public relations work just as singer Lee Jung previously was. After he finishes the training course in the rear in accordance with a rotation system, he may be assigned to a PR unit.”
Concerning the issue, an information officer of the Marine Corps said, “We cannot make a remark on Private Kim Tae Pyeong (Hyun Bin’s real name)."
An information officer of the Defense Ministry also declined to comment on the issue. A representative of Hyun’s agency cautiously remarked, “It’ll be better to ask the military about the issue. We didn’t hear anything from Hyun.”
Hyun Bin, who enlisted in the Marines in March, was mobilized to a few PR events while serving as a combat infantryman. He participated in the Seoul Recovery Commemorative Marine Marathon on September 25, and acted as a MC for a concert of Marine band on September 30. On October 5-7, he made a visit to Indonesia as a special envoy to promote arms exports amid the controversy over his being assigned to a PR work.
