Weekly Roundup: Celebrity Rise and Fall
In good news, an announcer couple went public with their relationship and plans to marry, while Lee Seung Gi proved he can do no wrong. Meanwhile, it wasn’t a great week for leading ladies like Seo Woo, Soo Ae and Moon Geun Young, who found themselves in hot water for one reason or another.
Here’s our list of the stars who were in the spotlight this week, for better or for worse.
Stars on the Rise
1. Jun Jong Hwan-Moon Ji Ae
MBC announcer Jun Jong Hwan and announcer Moon Ji Ae announced they would be getting married next spring after revealing they had been secretly dating for four years. Although their relationship was known in the announcer world, the other announcers didn’t make reference to the relationship in public because it was a private issue between the two individuals. Moon revealed to MBC’s announcer webzine, “I don’t think we’ve ever gotten dressed up to go out on dates. We would wear hats and make sad attempts at covering ourselves up.”
2. Lee Seung Gi
Lee recently returned with his fifth studio album Tonight, but his polite manners during the question and answer session at his showcase are what have been garnering interest. On the sensitive topic of mandatory military enlistment, Lee said, “As a Korean man, it’s something you have to do. I’d like to go while I am healthy and still have a youthful image.” When asked about Kang Ho Dong’s absence, he said, “He’s a great senior. I can’t and don’t want to take his spot.”
3. Han Seok Gyu
The actor, who plays the spirit of King Sejong in SBS’s A Tree With Deep Roots, is at the center of attention once again for leading the high-quality historical drama. Han joined the ranks of Korea’s top actors through a series of successful films in the mid- and late-nineties; however the drama has served to help the actor over his recent slump.
4. Ulala Session
On the most recent live broadcast of Mnet’s Superstar K3, Ulala Session moved the audience with its cover of Western Sky from the original soundtrack of film Blue Swallow, which starred the late Jang Jin Young, who lost her battle with stomach cancer. Leader Im Yun Taek revealed that his stomach cancer had progressed to stage IV, but he managed to put on an incredible performance. Jang’s husband Kim Young Gyun left a message of support for Im on his mini homepage saying, ‘I wish Ulala Session’s Im Yun Taek a speedy recovery and cheer on your passion.’
The rapper, who was engulfed in a controversy concerning his academic background, has made a successful comeback to the music industry. He appeared on SBS′s Inkigayo on October 30 for the first time in a year and a half and said, “I’m happy and thankful to be able to do music again.”
Stars Falling Flat
1. Seo Woo
The actress was the target of criticism when reports surfaced that her manager threatened and extorted 1.6 million won a valet driver after he caused a minor car accident while parking. Seo Woo, who was at a production presentation for a drama at the time, immediately apologized and a representative from the agency said, after confirming the truth, the manager had been dismissed.
2. Im Ji Young
In bizarre news, Im Ji Young, who took to the streets in revealing clothes during the World Cup, has become possessed by a spirit and become a shaman. That’s right, you read that correctly. While netizens have fired off on the actress, she said, “This is clearly different from the World Cup issue. It is my destiny to be possessed by a spirit and it’s a turning point in my life.”
3. Soo Ae
The A Thousand Days’ Promise actress was swept up in a controversy for donning designer duds in the drama, where she plays a character with modest means. The actress addressed the controversy at a reporters’ roundtable explaining, “There’s been a misunderstanding. The bag and shoes I am seen wearing are domestic brands.”
4. Moon Geun Young
The actress, who is currently studying English in the States, was recently snapped waiting in line outside of a New York City club, wearing a leather jacket, smoky eye makeup and rocking a disheveled hairstyle.
